Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI - Zach Petrick improved to 2-0 with eight strong innings and Ronnie Shaban notched his second save as Springfield trimmed Corpus Christi 2-1 Tuesday at Whataburger Field before 5,554.

In subjecting the Hooks to consecutive losses for the first time in 2014, Springfield captured the series victory while improving to 5-7. Corpus Christi stands 8-4.

Petrick, who retired 11 of the last dozen men he faced, permitted just five hits. He walked one, struck out four and 73 of his 100 pitches went for strikes.

Shaban worked a 1-2-3 ninth.

Springfield lead-off hitter Rafael Ortega reached on a strike three wild pitch from Tommy Shirley, fueling the night's first run. A James Ramsey bunt single and Aledmys Diaz sacrifice bunt later, Ortega scored when Curt Smith bounced out to second baseman Kike Hernandez.

The Hooks drew even in the second, Hernandez's two-out double to left preceding an RBI blooper the same direction by Leo Heras.

The Cardinals moved ahead for good during the fifth, but had the makings of more than a single-run surge. One-out singles from Matt Williams, Ortega (bunt) and Ramsey loaded the bases. Diaz's flare to left off reliever Andrew Robinson plated Williams, but Ortega was cut down at home by Preston Tucker.

Shirley (1-2), scheduled to go five, exited two outs prematurely when Ramsey's liner caromed off his left leg. Shirley allowed five hits, walked one and struck out six.

Matt Heidenreich was strong in relief for Corpus Christi, racking up five strikeouts and facing the minimum over three frames.

The Hooks travel to Frisco for four games Thursday through Sunday. Corpus Christi entertains the RoughRiders and RockHounds during an eight-game homestand April 21-28.
