Springfield Cardinals News Release

Corpus Christi, TX - Behind 8.0 innings of work from RHP Zach Petrick, the Springfield Cardinals took the finale from the Corpus Christi Hooks, 2-1, before 5,554 fans at Whataburger Field on Tuesday night. The Cardinals win their second consecutive series and finish the Texas road trip going 4-2.

The Cardinals (5-7) struck for the game's first run right out of the gates in the top of the first against LHP Tommy Shirley (L, 1-2). CF Rafael Ortega started off the frame by reaching first base when the third strike against him got by C Rene Garcia for a wild pitch. RF James Ramsey followed with a bunt single, before both he and Ortega advanced ninety feet on a sacrifice bunt from DH Aledmys Diaz. With runners at second and third, 1B Curt Smith bounced an RBI groundout to second, scoring Ortega for the 1-0 lead.

The Hooks (8-4) battled it back even against Petrick (W, 2-0) in the bottom of the second. With two down, 2B Enrique Hernandez placed a double inside the left field line to keep the inning going. DH Leo Heras then floated an RBI single to shallow left-center, scoring Hernandez to even it, 1-1.

Springfield swung back in front with a fifth inning rally against Shirley and RHP Andrew Robinson. With one down, SS Matt Williams singled himself on, before moving to second on a bunt single by Ortega. Ramsey then ripped a base hit to center field, loading the bases for Diaz. With Robinson taking over on the mound, Diaz came through with an RBI single that he chopped through the left side of the infield, scoring Williams from third. Ortega tried to come in from second but was thrown out at the plate by LF Preston Tucker, however the Cards claimed the 2-1 lead on the knock by Diaz.

Petrick ensured that the narrow advantage would hold up, keeping the Hooks bats at bay through his 8.0 innings of work. RHP Ronnie Shaban (S, 2) took over for the ninth and slammed the door with a 1-2-3 final frame, closing the 2-1 win for the Cardinals.
