Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Bowling Green, Ky. - Both pitching staffs dominated opposing hitters, but the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays) dropped both games of a doubleheader to the Kane County Cougars (Chicago Cubs) on Tuesday evening at Bowling Green Ballpark. Kane County took game one by a score of 2-0, and they held off the Hot Rods for a 1-0 win in game two.

Game one starter German Marquez (0-1) was dominant for the Hot Rods, but was the recipient of one unearned run and picked up the loss. Marquez worked five frames, and only conceded a pair of hits, and generated an astounding 12 groundball outs, as only one ball left the infield. The lone unearned run scored off Marquez in the fourth, when Yasiel Balaguert singled, moved to second on a walk, then to third on a passed ball. He scored when catcher Oscar Hernandez committed an error as he tried to throw him out as he drifted off the bag at third base.

Jen-Ho Tseng (1-0) worked into the sixth, and did not allow a run as he picked up the win for Kane County. He struck out six en route to his first professional victory.

Blake Snell and Brad Schreiber combined to limit the Cougars to one run on four hits in game two, but it was not enough as the Hot Rods dropped game two, 1-0. Snell worked into the fifth and allowed the run to be handed the loss. He only allowed four hits, and struck out five. Schreiber worked the final two and two-thirds, allowing only one base runner and stranding the two runners he inherited.

The lone run of game two crossed with two outs in the third. Jacob Hannemann singled weakly through the right side, then came around to score when Carlos Penalver followed with a double to right field.

Paul Blackburn (1-0) is a top-20 Cubs prospect, and he allowed just one hit over his six shutout frames. Jose Arias took his first save of the season after working the seventh.

The Hot Rods will try and snap the franchise's worst losing streak since moving to Bowling Green on Wednesday morning. A special start-time of 10:35 a.m. is on tap at Bowling Green Ballpark in game three of a six-game homestand. One-third pound hamburgers will be just three dollars all day Wednesday, and gates open up at 9:30 a.m. Bowling Green will turn to Jake Faria (0-1, 3.24) on the mound.
