Portland Pirates News Release
LEWISTON, ME - The Portland Pirates and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Maine have named Peggy York a 2014 Anthem Community Angel.
The Anthem Community Angels program recognizes local "heroes" who have led, created or otherwise been instrumental in activities that improve our community. Examples include building a playground, raising money to help an individual or family in a difficult situation, involvement in youth athletics or other activities, or regularly volunteering with a local non-profit.
York was chosen as a Community Angel for her volunteer work supporting the CATCH Healthy Habits program in the Portland. Her efforts include preparing healthy snacks, teaching a short nutritional lessons and leading children in grades K-5 in active physical games. Now in her third term as a volunteer, York is sharing her insights and lessons with others by training new volunteers for the program.
"Peggy York's efforts to combat childhood obesity by teaching lifelong habits to children in the Portland area is honorable and appreciated by the community at large," said Dan Corcoran, president and general manager, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Maine. "We're very excited to recognize her as a Community Angel."
CATCH Healthy Habits is a program of The OASIS Institute working to combat childhood obesity by teaching healthy habits to kids in after-school programs.
"Peggy York is a star volunteer, supporting the CATCH Healthy Habits program in the Portland area because she is very dedicated to helping young children learn about healthy lifestyles, avoiding the obesity epidemic to live longer, healthier lives," said Sharon Schulberger in her nomination.
"We appreciate York's dedication to encouraging healthy habits in our community," said Brad Church, Portland Pirates Chief Operating Officer. "We look forward to supporting her charitable efforts in seasons to come."
As an Anthem Community Angel, York was recognized at a Pirates home game on April 2, 2014 and received a framed, autographed Pirates jersey. Anthem will also make a $500 contribution in her name to the Southern Maine Area on Aging.
The Pirates will continue their final home stretch of the season on Wednesday when they host the Albany Devils at 7 pm at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. Wednesday's game can be heard on News Talk WLOB AM 1310/AM 780 as well as WEZR FM 105.5/AM 1240 in the Lewiston/Auburn area and WTME AM 780/1450 in Oxford County.
