Lancaster JetHawks News Release

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. - Kyle Smith entered the game with a big lead but proceeded to toss four hitless innings in the JetHawks 7-2 victory over the Lake Elsinore Storm on Saturday night at The Diamond.

Smith (1-0) struck out six and walked two to pick up his first win in his third outing of the year.

Lancaster jumped on the board early with two runs in the first inning against Storm starter Bryan Rodriguez (0-1). Tony Kemp led off with a single, stole second base, moved to third on an error and scored on a Rio Ruiz grounder. That ground ball was thrown into right field by the pitcher Rodriguez to allow Teoscar Hernandez to score.

The two errors in the first inning were the first of six errors on the night for Lake Elsinore. In total, the errors led to three unearned runs.

The JetHawks added another run in the second inning when Carlos Perdomo singled, was sacrificed to second, moved to third on a grounder and scored on a balk.

Starter Lance McCullers battled his command and a high pitch count early in the game. He allowed a run in the first and a run in the third. The right-hander finished with 3 2/3 innings, two hits, four strikeouts, two walks and two hit batters.

J.D. Osborne threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief before Smith took over in the sixth.

Lancaster added a couple more runs in the fourth. Perdomo reached base and scored on a passed ball before Kemp reached on a hit by pitch and scored on a Hernandez sacrifice fly.

The JetHawks scored two of the three unearned runs in the seventh inning with reliever Matthew Shepherd on the mound. Dan Gulbransen picked up an RBI with a single and Jake Rodriguez scored when the catcher Rodriguez couldn't handle the throw from rightfielder Hunter Renfroe.
