San Jose Giants News Release

SAN JOSE - The Bakersfield Blaze tied the game with a solo home run in the top of the ninth and then erupted for seven runs in the 10th inning to defeat the San Jose Giants by an 11-7 score on Saturday evening at Municipal Stadium. Bakersfield sent 12 batters to the plate in the top of the 10th scoring seven runs on four hits while also taking advantage of five walks, a wild pitch and a passed ball. The Giants have now lost five out of their last six games to fall to 4-6 on the season.

Elliott Blair (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and Ben Turner (2-for-5) had two hits apiece while Blake Miller (1-for-4, 2 RBI) drove home a pair of runs to lead San Jose offensively in defeat.

The Giants took a 4-3 lead into the top of the ninth inning, but Blaze designated hitter John Tolisano smacked an opposite-field one-out solo homer to left off of Tyler Mizenko to tie the game.

Then in the 10th, Ryan Wright led off with a first-pitch triple off the fence in straightaway center against Ryan Bradley before Jesse Winker grounded an RBI single up the middle to give Bakersfield their first lead since the opening frame.

The 10th inning rally continued as Seth Mejias-Brean followed the Winker hit with a single of his own. After a Kyle Waldrop sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk to Marquez Smith to load the bases, Bradley issued a five-pitch walk to Tolisano to force home the second run of the inning. Juan Silva then singled up the middle to score two more for an 8-4 Blaze advantage.

Ian Gardeck was then summoned from the bullpen, but he walked three out of the first four batters he faced as the onslaught continued. A passed ball on Turner plated the fifth run of the inning before an RBI force out and then a Gardeck wild pitch with a runner at third made it 11-4.

The Giants rallied for three runs in the bottom of the 10th inning, but still fell short in their comeback effort. After back-to-back one-out singles from Turner and Blair, Chuckie Jones smacked an RBI double into the left center field gap. Miller then doubled into the left field corner to bring home Blair and Jones trimming the lead to 11-7. However, Rando Moreno followed by grounding out before Jesus Galindo flied out to deep center to end the game.

Kyle McMyne (1-0) was credited with the win out of the Bakersfield bullpen after pitching the ninth and tenth innings. McMyne worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to keep the game tied before surrendering three runs in the tenth.

Bradley (0-1) suffered the loss for San Jose. The left-hander, who entered the game to begin the top of the 10th, was charged with six runs (all earned) on four hits over 1/3 of an inning. He walked two and struck out none. Bradley retired only one out of the seven batters he faced.

The Giants built a 4-1 lead through five innings on Saturday. Mac Williamson delivered a two-out, RBI double in the bottom of the first to tie the score 1-1. In the third, consecutive errors started the frame before a walk to Williamson loaded the bases. Turner then grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to plate the go-ahead run. Then in the bottom of the fifth, Blair came through with a two-out, two-RBI single up the middle to extend the lead to 4-1.

Pat Young started on the mound for San Jose and tossed five-plus innings with three runs (all earned) and three hits allowed. Young gave up one run in the top of the first, but then worked four straight 1-2-3 innings from the second through the fifth. He had retired 12 consecutive Bakersfield hitters until a leadoff walk in the top of the sixth. Young departed the game after the first two batters reached base in the sixth inning - both of which eventually scored. He walked two and struck out five during his 81-pitch performance.

San Francisco Giants left-hander Jeremy Affeldt pitched two scoreless innings over the seventh and eighth as part of his rehabilitation assignment. Affeldt worked around two singles in the top of the seventh inducing a double play to end the rally. He then needed just 11 pitches to breeze through a 1-2-3 eighth inning. Affeldt walked none and struck out one while maintaining the 4-3 Giants advantage.
