Two Road Games Left in the Quest for 40

The Wheeling Nailers clinched their 12th playoff berth in team history last weekend, when the South Carolina Stingrays defeated the Florida Everblades, 3-2 on Sunday afternoon. This weekend, the Nailers will finish the regular season with a pair of games in Cincinnati, after completing a 5-1-0 homestand at WesBanco Arena. Unfortunately, the most recent game didn't go Wheeling's way, as Sahir Gill was responsible for the lone goal in a 3-1 setback against the Orlando Solar Bears. With 38 wins in 70 games thus far, the Nailers have an opportunity to chase down their sixth season with at least 40 victories in team history, and their first since 2005-06.

They Don't Want to Leave Home

The Cincinnati Cyclones enter the weekend in fifth place in the Eastern Conference, as they have accumulated 86 points in 69 games, after earning at least one point in eight of their last nine contests (6-1-2). On Wednesday night, the Cyclones played host to the Kalamazoo Wings, and despite only 32 shots on goal between the two teams, seven goals were scored. Sam Ftorek knotted the game for Kalamazoo at 10:14 of the third period, before Joe Sova connected for the game winning goal at 2:17 of overtime, as the Wings came from behind to pick up the 4-3 win. Cincinnati is currently one point behind Orlando for fourth place in the Eastern Conference, with one game in hand.

A Handful of Possibilities

Although there are only three days remaining in the 2013-14 ECHL regular season, the Nailers still find themselves with five possible opponents for the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal Round. Wheeling needs just one win in the final two games to secure a finish no lower than seventh in the conference, while two wins could lift them as high as fifth or sixth. Reading is the only squad that has solidified its position in the standings, as the Royals took home the regular season conference title for the second straight campaign. The five possible first round opponents for the Nailers are: Cincinnati, Kalamazoo, Orlando, Reading, and South Carolina.

The Importance of the Second

During their last homestand, the Nailers thoroughly dominated the second period, oustcoring the opposition 12-0 in six games. In five of those games, Wheeling's performance gave it a lead at the end of the middle frame, which has been a recipe for success this season. When leading after two periods, the Nailers have gone 27-0-1, with the lone setback coming on November 20th in Reading. On the other side of the ice, Cincinnati has also been nearly unbeatable when leading after two, as the Cyclones are 30-0-2 in that situation.

Tied Up Through Ten

Friday night marks the 11th of 12 head-to-head meetings between the Nailers and Cyclones this season, as well as the fifth of six battles between the two clubs at US Bank Arena. The first ten tilts have been played to an even tie, as both sides enter the weekend series with five wins, 11 points, and 26 goals. The most recent clash took place on March 15th in Wheeling, when Cody Sylvester broke a scoreless tie with a shorthanded goal in the third period of a 2-0 win for the Nailers. That result gave Wheeling a slim 53-52 advantage in the 105-game all-time series. Cincinnati has won 28 of its 52 games at home, but the teams have split the four games there this season.
