THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia dropped a 2-0 final to Lexington on Opening Night at Appalachian Power Park. Buddy Borden and Luis Rico matched zeros over the first four innings, despite both teams having runners on during each frame. The game remained scoreless until the top of the eighth inning when Fred Ford hit a two-run home run off Justin Topa. Andrew Edwards completed the shutout for the Legends, pitching the final five innings for the win. Topa allowed five hits including the home run over three relief innings and took the loss. Danny Collins had two of the five Power hits. Borden pitched five scoreless innings for the Power, striking out four and walking one. West Virginia left the bases loaded twice en route to their fifth loss of the season and third in a row.

THIRSTY FOR BASEBALL: 3,659 fans were in attendance for the 2014 home opener. The largest Opening Day crowd was at the start of the 2006 season in the second year of Appalachian Power Park (5,742). Thursday night's attendance exceeded the first game of the 2013 season by 966 patrons.

SHUTDOWN: The Power offense was stymied by the Legends on Thursday, reaching base on four singles and one double while being shutout for the first time this season. West Virginia left the bases loaded twice and are one of four teams without at least one bases loaded hit this season (along with Greenville, Hickory, and Lexington). The Power are hitless in six at bats with the bags full.

STARTING A STREAK: Erich Weiss went hitless over his first three games this season for the Power, going 0-9 in Lexington last weekend. The second baseman notched his first hit on Sunday and has now reached safely with at least one base hit in each of his last five games. Weiss is batting .438 over his five game streak with seven knocks in 16 at bats.

WELCOME HOME: West Virginia is now 5-5 during home openers at Appalachian Power Park. Since becoming a Pirates affiliate in 2009, the team has gone 2-4 during its home debut.

RISP-Y BUSINESS: West Virginia is batting a league-low .145 with runners in scoring position so far in 2014. The club has 10 hits over 69 at bats with runners in scoring position and had driven in 19 runs. Two other clubs are batting under .200 with runners in scoring position while Greensboro has a league-best .293 average.

WAIT FOR IT: The Power have played Lexington more than any other opponent during their nine previous seasons. The cross-division rivals are only two-and-a-half hours apart along I-64 and have played 179 times since the start of the 2005 season. West Virginia leads the all-time series 92-87 after having gone 11-9 against Lexington last season. The Legends hold the upper hand in Charleston, having a 45-38 mark at Appalachian Power Park since it opened.

FIRST ONE OUT: JaCoby Jones home run in the fifth inning of game one on Tuesday was the first hit by a West Virginia Power player this season. The Power were one of the last remaining teams without a home run in 2014. Augusta remains the only club in the league without a home run to their credit this year while Asheville has a league-best seven.

PROMO UPDATE- APRIL 12: The first 1,000 fans on Saturday, April 12, will receive a Starling Marte Bobblehead. Note the early 2:05 pm start for that day.

POWER POINTS: Copies of the 2014 Media Guide are available upon request... Barrett Barnes and Harold Ramirez left Sunday's game with leg injuries and both were placed on the Power Disabled List on Monday. The Pirates promoted infielder Adam Landecker and outfielder Justin Maffei from lower levels to fill the openings on the roster.

AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh rallied from a 4-0 deficit with a five-run seventh to best Chicago 5-4. Pedro Alvarez and Travis Snider homered to back Gerrit Cole in the win... Indianapolis walked off with a 4-3 win over Toledo on a Chris Dickerson sac fly... Altoona beat Richmond 6-1. Stetson Allie had three hits in the victory... Bradenton was shut out 6-0 by Palm Beach.
