Victoria Royals News Release

Portland, OR - On Thursday night at the Moda Centre, the Victoria Royals looked to stave off elimination against the Portland Winterhawks in Game 5 of their Western Conference Semi-Final series. The Royals gave Patrik Polivka the start between the pipes, while the Winterhawks responded with Brendan Burke.

The Winterhawks opened the scoring on a powerplay goal by Taylor Leier at the 13:46 mark of the first period when he pounced on a rebound in front of the net. Adam De Champlain added to Portland's lead with 34 seconds left in the opening frame as the puck took a fortunate bounce after a shot from behind the net. After 20 minutes of play, the Winterhawks held a 2-0 lead.

Polivka was tested early in the middle frame, but was up to the task as he stopped two excellent Portland chances on the penalty kill. The Winterhawks later took a three-goal lead at the 10:31 mark on a goal by Oliver Bjorkstrand. The Royals got one back on a Steven Hodges powerplay goal at the 15:11 mark when he one-timed a shot from the right face-off circle past Burke, but Portland took a 3-1 lead into the second intermission.

The Royals pressured the Winterhawks as they looked to draw closer in the third period, but a pair of late goals by Chase De Leo rounded out the scoring and gave Portland a series-clinching victory. Portland 5 Victoria 1.

Victoria went 1/4 25.0% on the powerplay, while Portland went 2/6 33.3%. The Winterhawks outshot the Royals 40-32.

After falling in five games in the Western Conference Semi-Final, the Royals conclude a record-breaking season that saw the club win its first playoff series in franchise history and set numerous franchise marks including their 48 regular season wins and 100 regular season points.
