New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

The New Orleans Zephyrs and Oklahoma City RedHawks entered the eighth inning tied 2-2 Thursday, but the RedHawks then exploded for six runs to win 8-2 and sweep the four-game series at Zephyr Field and push the Z's losing streak to seven games.

New Orleans has dropped seven of its first eight games for the first time in franchise history.

Zephyrs starter Adam Conley held the Oklahoma City to two runs on four hits through 5 1/3 innings and reliever Carter Capps worked the next 1 2/3 innings without any damage, but Chaz Roe entered to begin the eighth and gave up back-to-back home runs to the first two batters he faced.

George Springer took Roe deep on a 1-2 pitch to lead off the inning, and Jon Singleton's blast to right-center field three pitches later to give Oklahoma City a 4-2 lead.

Roe walked two of the of the next three hitters before manager Andy Haines pulled him in favor of Rett Varner, who came off the disabled list earlier in the day.

Varner allowed two hits and walked two hitters without recording an out, as Oklahoma City scored its seventh and eighth runs of the game before had to leave the game with an injury.

Roe (0-1) was charged with the loss and five of the six runs Oklahoma City scored in the inning.

The game remained scoreless through the first three innings, but Oklahoma City struck first when designated hitter Japhet Amador singled to left field to score Springer in the fourth.

The Zephyrs answered in the bottom half of the inning, as Justin Bour doubled off the right-center field wall to extend his hitting streak to eight games. Kyle Jensen followed with a single to left field, and Rob Brantly drove in Bour with a sacrifice fly to center.

The Zephyrs again scored in the fifth inning on Josh Rodriguez's second home run of the season, but the lead was short-lived, as Oklahoma City tied the game 2-2 in the top of the sixth on an Amador sacrifice fly that scored Singleton.

New Orleans scored both of its runs off of RedHawks starter Bobby Doran, who allowed six hits and struck out three in 4 2/3 innings of work, while reliever Raul Valdez finished the fifth inning by inducing a ground out to shortstop by Brian Bogusevic, who also made his first error of the season when he misplayed a ground ball in the eighth.

David Martinez (2-0) pitched the final four innings for Oklahoma City with two strikeoouts and a walk while allowing three hits to earn the win.

The Zephyrs and RedHawks will now travel to Oklahoma City to begin another four-game set as part of a stretch of eight consecutive games against each other.

The first game will be Oklahoma City's home opener and is scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m. Friday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark with Elih Villanueva on the mound for the Zephyrs against Rudy Owens, who earned the win with four innings of scoreless relief work in a 6-4 victory Monday over the Zephyrs.
