Alsup Strikes out Career-High 10 in 8-1 Loss

Modesto Nuts' starter Ben Alsup recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts but allowed three home runs in an 8-1 loss to the Visalia Rawhide at Recreation Park on Tuesday evening.

Alsup (L, 0-2) allowed just three hits in the first four innings but two of them were home runs. In the Rawhide (4-2) second, Alex Glenn whacked his second home run of the year. In the third, Fidel Pena smashed a solo blast that ricocheted off the right field scoreboard.

Things unraveled in the fifth inning for Alsup and the Nuts (0-6). The frame led off with a single from Socrates Brito who scored on a triple off the wall by Steven Rodriguez. Raul Navarro followed with an RBI infield single. For the second consecutive start, Alsup's night ended on a home run. Brandon Drury blasted a two-run shot as part of the decisive five-run fifth inning.

Andrew Barbosa (W, 1-1) shut down the Nuts offense over six innings. After striking out 11 in his first outing, Barbosa K'ed 12 Nuts on Tuesday evening. After allowing a run on an infield single to Juan Ciriaco in the second, Barbosa did not allow another runner to advance past second base.

The Nuts will wrap up their season-opening, seven-game road trip on Wednesday evening at 4:00 p.m. against the Rawhide. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will begin at 3:55 p.m. Righty Ryan Gibbard (0-1) will throw for the Nuts against Rawhide right-hander Brandon Sinnery (0-0).
