Sacramento River Cats News Release

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - River Cats infielder Alden Carrithers battled 51s reliever Jeff Walters in a 15-pitch marathon at-bat with two outs in the ninth on Tuesday night, but home plate umpire Ryan Goodman ultimately called Carrithers out on strikes, giving Sacramento its second-straight 7-6 loss to Las Vegas at Cashman Field.

The 51s jumped out to a three-run lead in the bottom of the second inning, but the Cats tied the game with three runs of their own in the top of the third highlighted by back-to-back run-scoring doubles from Shane Peterson and Stephen Vogt. Las Vegas retook the lead with two runs in the fifth before Sacramento climbed back into the fray with a run in the sixth-a Hiro Nakajima sacrifice fly-and another in the seventh on a wild pitch from Erik Goeddel.

Though the game was briefly tied, the 51s plated two in the bottom of the seventh on Eric Campbell's two-run home run off of Philip Humber. The River Cats made things interesting, scoring a run in the eighth when Peterson brought Tyler Ladendorf home on a groundout to 51s second baseman Daniel Muno. It wasn't enough, however, as Las Vegas slammed the door in the bottom of the ninth, taking a 2-games-to-0 series lead with another 7-6 victory.

Craig Gentry-making his second rehab start with Sacramento-went 1-for-4 with a run and a walk, bringing his two-game stat line to: 4-for-8 with a run, four RBI, and one walk. Peterson went 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, a walk, and a double, while Vogt finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a walk. The only other River Cats to record a hit were Carrithers and Kent Matthes with one apiece.

River Cats starter Arnold Leon took a no-decision, giving up three earned runs on four hits and one walk with two strikeouts in four innings of work. Humber took the loss-his first of the season-giving up two earned runs on one hit and one walk with two strikeouts in two innings of relief.

Goeddel was charged with a blown save, but picked up the victory after walking three and allowing one earned run in one inning pitched. 51s starting pitcher Rafael Montero struck out nine River Cats batters in five innings, but took a no-decision after relinquishing three earned runs on six hits and one walk. Walters earned his first save with his perfect ninth inning.

River Cats righty Sean Murphy (0-1, 8.31 ERA) will square off against top New York Mets prospect Noah Syndergaard (1-0, 3.00 ERA) at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday at Cashman Field.

Sacramento kicks off its 2014 home slate on a Fireworks Friday when the Salt Lake Bees visit Raley Field on April 11 to open an eight-game River Cats homestand.
