Condon Named CCM ECHL Goaltender of the Week
April 8, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, are happy to announce that a Wheeling player has won another league award during the 2013-14 season. Mike Condon has been named CCM ECHL Goaltender of the Week for Mar. 31-Apr. 6.
Condon, 23 earns the honor for the third time this season, after posting a 3-0-0 record, with a nearly perfect 0.34 goals against average, and a .989 save percentage. Mike turned aside 89 of the 90 shots he faced last week, starting with a 34-save shutout against Toledo on Tuesday, following that up one night later with a 31-save shutout against the Walleye, before making 24 saves on 25 shots against Evansville on Friday. The Holliston, MA native's three victories helped the Nailers secure their fourth playoff berth in six seasons, as South Carolina defeated Florida on Sunday.
On the season, Condon has appeared in 38 games with Wheeling, backstopping he and the team to a 22-14-4 record, while registering a 2.24 goals against average, a .928 save percentage, and five shutouts. Mike's five shutouts tie him with Dany Sabourin (2004-05) and Andy Franck (2005-06) for the most in a single season in team history. His 22 victories leave him tied for sixth most in a single season. The 6-foot-2 netminder has also stepped into the crease in three games with the Hamilton Bulldogs this season, going 1-1-0, running his professional record to 29-14-4.
This is the sixth time this season that a Nailers player has won one of the ECHL's weekly awards, as well as Condon's third time taking home CCM ECHL Goaltender of the Week. In the team's history, Peter Delmas, Joel Laing, and Tyler MacKay are the only other goaltenders to win that honor on three separate occasions, but Condon becomes the first to do so three times in the same season. Delmas' four total stand as the team record. Mike's previous two honors took place during the weeks of Nov. 25-Dec. 1 and Mar. 10-16.
Mike Condon and the Nailers will finish the 2013-14 regular season in Cincinnati on Friday and Saturday at 7:35, before entering the Kelly Cup Playoffs. Wheeling's home games in the first round will take place on April 23rd, 25th, and 26th (if necessary).
