Dominant Arms Rewarded with Walk-Off Win

LANCASTER, Calif. - Rio Ruiz whacked a two-out, two-run double off the right field wall in the ninth inning to score two and give the JetHawks a 2-1 walk-off victory over the San Jose Giants on Monday night at The Hangar.
With two outs and nobody on in the ninth, Giants closer Tyler Mizenko walked Teoscar Hernandez and Carlos Correa to bring Ruiz to the plate. Ruiz faced fouled off two pithes with two strikes against him before lining a ball over the head of the right fielder. Both runs scored without a play at the plate.
The late game heroics rewarded a dominant performance by JetHawks starters Kyle Westwood and Vince Velasquez. Velasquez (1-0) finished the game and picked up the win with four no-hit innings. The right-hander struck out five without issuing a walk. Only one batter reached base on an error.
Westwood struck out seven over five innings in his first true start of the season. He allowed an unearned run in the third inning. With a runner at first base and no outs, Jesus Galindo bunted a ball back to the mound. Westwood fielded it but threw the ball into foul ground putting runners at second and third.
Alberto Robles followed with a groundout to score the Giants only run of the game. West allowed just three hits.
San Jose's bullpen spoiled an impressive performance from starter Joe Biagini. The right-hander allowed just two hits over six scoreless innings.
The JetHawks (3-2) take on the Giants (3-2) in the second game of the three game series on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Kyle Smith and Josh Hader will pitch for Lancaster against first rounder Chris Stratton.
