Floyd Leads Law to Win over Bloomington, 57-47

Quarterback Joshua Floyd, Jr. threw three-touchdown passes and ran for four more during the Dodge City Law's 57-47 win Saturday night against the Bloomington Edge in Illinois.
Both Dodge City and Bloomington struggled offensively early on in the game. Both teams were unable to get into the end zone during the first quarter and each offensive drive ended with a field-goal attempt.
After missing his first field-goal attempt, Law kicker Alex Fambrough scored the game's first points with 3:46 left in the first quarter when he kicked the ball through the uprights from 23-yards out.
Law Head Coach Sean Ponder said that he was disappointed about the Law's early struggles offensively, but that he was glad they were able to turn things around.
"We got off to a slow start, but we eventually found our groove and started producing offensively," Ponder said.
In the second quarter, Law quarterback Joshua Floyd began to notice weaknesses in the defense and he started to exploit them. He threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Venson and sneaked into the end zone for a rushing touchdown from the one-yard line.
Bloomington answered with a passing touchdown from quarterback Charles Dowdell to Marcus Lewis and a rushing touchdown by LaVaugh Macon.
Dodge City's Joshua Floyd capped the first half with a 13-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Mo Young.
After trailing 23-17 at halftime, Bloomington took the lead briefly late in the third quarter when quarterback Charles Dowdell threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Lewis.
The Law responded with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Joshua Floyd to Mo Young, which gave Dodge City a 30-24 lead.
Dodge City's relied heavily on its running game in the latter portion of the contest.
Joshua Floyd scored rushing touchdowns from 1-, 2-, and 7-yards out. Running back D.D. Holyfield added a 5-yard touchdown run with 1:37 left on the clock, which gave the Law an insurmountable 57-41 lead.
After Bloomington quarterback Charles Dowdell's 15-yard touchdown pass to D'Andre Eagle with 1:20 left on the clock, Dodge City got the ball back with a 57-47 lead, which was the game's final score.
Joshua Floyd, who scored a total of seven touchdowns for the Law, said that he just took what the opposition gave him.
"We noticed early on that they were covering our receivers pretty tight and they were only rushing three linemen, so that opened up the field for Dominique Carson, D.D. Holyfield, and I to run the ball," Floyd said. "But, even though the defense seemed focused on protecting against the pass, the receivers did a great job of creating space and getting open."
Law Head Coach Sean Ponder said he felt good about how Floyd performed on Saturday and how he is adjusting to the team's offensive schemes.
"Joshua played very well tonight and he is progressing well as a quarterback in our system," Ponder said. "He is picking up the offense quickly, which enables us to install more plays and increase the number of options that we have."
Floyd said he feels comfortable with the offense and the players that he lines up with.
"We've done well in my first two games with the Law because of how we have played as a unit," Floyd said. "The offensive line has done a good job of protecting me when I drop back to pass and they have opened up lanes for the running backs to get through. And, like I said before, the receivers have found ways to get open even when the defenses were focused on shutting them down."
"Dominique Carson and D.D. Holyfield do an excellent job of running the ball and picking up yards after contact," Floyd added. "When they do well, it takes pressure off of the receivers and that makes it easier for me to get the ball down field to them."
Next Saturday at 7:05 p.m., the Law (3-2) will play an away game against the Salina Bombers (3-1.)
