Providence Bruins Bury the Pirates 7-2

Providence, R.I. - The Providence Bruins defeated the Portland Pirates today at the Dunkin' Donuts Center by a final score of 7-2. The P-Bruins got goals from Justin Florek, Ryan Spooner, Matt Fraser, Joe Morrow, Seth Griffith, and Jared Knight while Niklas Svedberg made 28 saves.

In the first period the Providence Bruins started off strong, scoring at the 2:10 mark, giving Florek his 18th goal of the season with assist from Griffith. The P-Bruins were able to keep their momentum up and scored again at the 4:22 mark, with Ryan Spooner earning his 11th goal of the season. Assists went to Craig Cunningham and Fraser. Providence extended their lead to 3-0 at the 9:49 mark with Fraser scoring on a power play, giving him his 18th goal of the season. Griffith and Cunningham had the assists. A penalty shot was awarded to Alexander Khokhlachev with 7:47 remaining in the first, but was denied a goal. Portland had some good scoring chances, but were unable to get on the board by the conclusion of the first period.

During the second period, the Portland Pirates were able make it 3-1 at the 1:22 mark, giving Lucas Lessio his 27th goal of the season, assisted by Kevin Raine and Joel Hanley. Portland continued to find their way back into the game on a power play at the 12:48 mark with a goal from Brandon Yip, making that his 12th goal of the season. Assists were from Tobias Rieder and Greg Carey. Morrow fired a hard wrist shot past Chris Rawlings on a power play with just three seconds left in the period to bring the game up 4-2, making that his sixth goal of the season. Spooner and Zach Trotman assisted the goal.

At the 8:41 mark of the third period, Florek brought Providence up 5-2, scoring his second goal of the game and his 19th of the season. Khokhlachev and Griffith assisted the goal. Just a couple minutes later Providence scored again with an unassisted goal from Griffith on a short breakaway at the 11:46 mark, earning his 20th goal of the season. The P-Bruins extended their lead to 7-2 at the 14:39 mark with a goal from Knight. The goal was assisted by Bobby Robins and Corey Kane, earning Kane his first professional game point.

The P-Bruins went 2-for-4 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill. Svedberg blocked 28 of 30 shots while Portland's Rawlings blocked 37 out of 44 shots.

Providence will have their next home game this Friday at 7:05 when they face-off against the Norfolk Admirals. The first 1,000 kids in attendance will receive a free t-shirt courtesy of Washington Trust.
