Hawks Are Undisputed Champs
April 5, 2014 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
One standings point from pushing Saturday's game to overtime made the Waterloo Black Hawks the outright Anderson Cup champions, and the other point coming from a favorable shootout against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders sent Young Arena fans home happy as the home team prevailed by an official final of 3-2.
The crowd of 3,471 knew the Hawks had won the Anderson Cup at the end of regulation, despite a 5-2 Indiana Ice win versus the Chicago Steel which temporarily tied the standings between the two teams in contention for the United States Hockey League regular season championship. Fans still hung on each shot during overtime and roared as eight different Waterloo shooters attempted to win the shootout. Jake Horton finally did it in the ninth round, recording the only shootout goal on a backhander over Danny Tirone. In the opposite crease, Cameron Johnson made sure Cedar Rapids could not put the puck into the net on any of their nine opportunities.
The first period had ended with no score, as the Black Hawks outshot the RoughRiders 14-4. The best opportunity came in the final minute before intermission, when Tirone snapped up Blake Winiecki's partial breakaway wrist shot, holding for no rebound after the glove save.
Cedar Rapids pulled ahead on the game's first power play at 3:35 of the second period. Andrew Poturalski found a loose puck in the blue paint and banged it across the goal line. However, the Hawks tied the score at 11:13; Winiecki was at the icing line and fed a pass to the slot. Drew Melanson, dashing to the net, redirected the opportunity into the goal with one touch.
In the third, Cedar Rapids reclaimed the lead at 4:49 when Dylan Stemen scored in transition at 4:49. However, the Hawks trailed for less than four minutes before top point producer Peter Krieger retied the affair. After moving behind the net, Patrick Russell centered the puck across the low slot to Kreiger waiting in the right wing circle, and the University of Alaska recruit snapped a shot past Tirone before the goalie could move from right to left.
Tickets for the Black Hawks' first round playoff series beginning Friday and Saturday against the Sioux Falls Stampede are on sale now. Waterloo will meet the Stampede after they finished fourth in the USHL Western Conference.
