Mavericks Defeat Sundogs 5-3 in Game 1 of CHL Playoffs
April 4, 2014 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks started the 2014 Central Hockey League Playoffs on the right skate with a 5-3 victory over the Arizona Sundogs at home at the Independence Events Center.
The Sundogs brought their A-game to the ice, and the Mavericks did their best to match and surpass the onslaught of shot attempts the visiting team threw at their net. The Mavs scored 3 special teams goals in the opening frame to give Missouri a healthy command of the game that continued through the contest.
First on the board in the opening round playoff game for the Mavs was defenseman Dave Pszenyczny assisted by Trevor Kell with a powerful shorthanded goal for Missouri that set the tone of the game. "It's something that we strive for in each game, getting the first goal," said Pszenyczny "playoff hockey is a game of emotions, get the first goal and the second goal comes easier."
Mike Ramsay followed Chezy's opening goal with a power play lamp-lighter assisted by Matt Stephenson and Eric Castonguay to give the Mavs a 2-0 lead over the Sundogs. Then Eric Castonguay tallied his own goal on another Mavericks power play opportunity, aided by Mike Ramsay and Colt King. Missouri held onto their 3-0 lead until the final minutes of the period when Brandon Coccimiglio put Arizona on the board.
Leading 3-1 heading into the second period in an increasingly chippy game, the Mavericks put emotions aside to score 2 second period goals from the "dream team" powerhouse line of Sebastien Thinel, Andrew Courtney and Eric Castonguay. Thinel brought the Mavs up 4-1 with helpers from Castongauy and Courtney 3 minutes into the second frame, followed by a 5-1 boost courtesy of Courtney via Castonguay and Thinel.
Holding a commanding 5-1 advantage at the top of the third period, the Mavericks were rushed with a flurry of shots on goal from the Sundogs, trying to make a dent in the full-team defensive effort of Missouri in front of goaltender Shane Owen. Arizona prevailed scoring twice in the third by David Rutherford and Shawn Limpright (PPG).
Anders Franzon was denied a penalty shot opportunity by Sundogs' goaltender Andrew Engelage to further the Mavericks lead and the game ended with a 5-3 scoreboard in favor of the home team.
The Mavericks continue their best-of-seven series against the Sundogs on Sunday, April 6th at the Independence Events Center.
