Offense Carries Rocks to Second Straight Win

Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Winston-Salem, NC - So far, so good for the Wilmington Blue Rocks, who improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 10-3 rout of the Winston-Salem Dash on Friday night at BB&T Ballpark. After the Blue Crew rode their pitching staff to a win in the season opener, it was the offense which carried the team on Friday. Wilmington pounded eight extra-bases, including its first two homeruns of the season en route to the lopsided triumph.
It was a wire-to-wire win for the Rocks, who scored in the first, third, sixth, seventh and ninth innings. The highlight of the night was a five-run seventh frame that featured the first seven hitters of the inning reaching base safely.
Five different Rocks recorded multiple hits on the night, led by Zane Evans, who went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two runs batted in, and Johermyn Chavez, who had three hits, four RBIs and the Blue Crew's first dinger of the year. Chavez's long ball broke open a tight game in the seventh. His three-run bomb to right increased Wilmington's edge to 8-2. Evans provided the Rocks an early spark, with run-scoring knocks in the first and third innings.
Jack Lopez, Cameron Gallagher and Cody Stubbs all added two hits each. Lopez scored twice, Gallagher drove in a pair on two doubles and Stubbs hit Wilmington's second homer of the night in the top of the ninth.
The offensive onslaught was in support of starter Jonathan Dziedzic, who earned the win in his Advanced-A debut. The 23-year-old southpaw fanned eight and walked only one as he yielded two runs on four hits over five innings. The only blemish on his ledger came courtesy of Courtney Hawkins' two-run homer in the fourth. Dziedic's (1-0) control was impressive, as he tossed 53 strikes in 77 pitches.
Winston-Salem starter Brad Goldberg took the loss. Goldberg (0-1) allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits in only four frames.
Three Wilmington relievers combined to hold the Dash to just a single score over the final four innings. Ali Williams, Glenn Sparkman and Aroni Nina all worked out of the bullpen for the Blue Crew.
The Rocks continue their season-opening four-game set in Winston-Salem on Saturday as right-hander Christian Binford gets the start for Wilmington against fellow righty Tony Bucciferro for the Dash. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m., and fans can listen to the broadcast on 89.7 WGLS-FM.
The Blue Rocks return to the Riverfront on Tuesday when the Myrtle Beach Pelicans come to town for the home opener. For ticket information call 302-888-BLUE or visit BlueRocks.com.
