Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
Pawtucket, RI - Four Lehigh Valley pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout and retired the final 15 batters they faced as the Iron Pigs topped the Pawtucket Red Sox, 4-0, Thursday night in the 2014 season opener in front of 8,266 fans at McCoy Stadium.
Starter David Buchanan (1-0) tossed six shutout innings, allowing only two hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Relievers Mike Nesseth, Jeremy Horst and Luis Garcia each tossed a 1-2-3 inning to finish the blanking, in the process ending the PawSox eight-game winning streak in season openers dating back to 2006.
Lehigh Valley took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the top of the first against Pawtucket starter Allen Webster (0-1). Maikel Franco's RBI single scored Clete Thomas, who led off the game with a double. Jim Murphy followed with a run-scoring single plating Franco.
Catcher Cameron Rupp drilled a solo home run in the fourth to make the score 3-0. Webster worked 3.2 innings and allowed three runs (all earned) on seven hits, garnering four strikeouts to go along with two walks.
Chris Resop (0.1 innings), Craig Breslow (0.2 innings), Tommy Layne (1.1 innings) and Drake Britton (1.1 innings) all pitched shutout ball in relief for Pawtucket. Cuba-native Dalier Hinojosa allowed a run on a wild pitch in the seventh inning in his PawSox debut.
Brock Holt and Garin Cecchini were the only Red Sox batters to reach base, each getting aboard with a hit and a walk. Murphy went 3-for-5 with a double and a triple to pace the Iron Pigs attack.
The second game of the four-game series is scheduled for Friday night at 7:05 pm. Right-hander Anthony Ranaudo (NR) is expected to start for the PawSox while the Iron Pigs counter with righty Barry Enright (NR).
