Jensen Powers Zephyrs to Season-Opening Win
April 3, 2014 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
New Orleans Zephyrs left fielder Kyle Jenson added to what has become his own opening-game tradition Thursday in a 2-1 win over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox in the season opener for both teams.
With strong winds blowing out to left field, Jenson smashed a pitch from Sky Sox left-handed starter Christian Friedrich well over the left-field wall in the second inning, the fourth consecutive year he has homered on Opening Day, giving the Zephyrs a 1-0 lead.
Jenson also scored the winning run for New Orleans in the bottom of the eighth when he crossed the plate on a double down the right-field line by first baseman Justin Bour.
Jenson and Bour combined for four of the Zephyrs' nine hits, as Jenson finished the game 2-for-3 with a walk, and Bour went 2-for-4 with the game's lone double.
New Orleans left-handed starting pitcher Brian Flynn (1-0) held Colorado Springs to two hits and no runs in his six innings of work with one walk and five strikeouts before he gave way to right-handed relief pitcher Arquimedes Caminero.
Caminero retired the Sky Sox in order in the seventh inning, but in the eighth Colorado Springs catcher Michael McKenry drove in left fielder Tim Wheeler on a sacrifice fly after Wheeler had led off the inning with a triple.
Caminero got credit for the win since the Zephyrs retook the lead in the bottom of the eighth, and right-handed reliever Chris Hatcher earned the save with a scoreless ninth inning.
The Sky Sox mustered four total hits off of Zephyrs pitching, while New Orleans had nine hits, including three off of Colorado Springs right-handed reliever Manny Corpas (0-1), who received the loss.
Friedrich struck out nine Zephyrs batters in his five innings, walked one hitter and allowed four hits. Still, the Zepyrs went 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position and left 10 runners on base.
The Zephyrs and Sky Sox are scheduled to play the second game of their season-opening, four-game series at 7 p.m. Friday at Zepyr Field. New Orleans plans to send right-hander Bryan Evans to the mound against Christian Bergman of the Sky Sox.
