April 1, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Portland Pirates News Release

LEWISTON, ME - The Portland Pirates and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Maine have named Rita Renaud an Anthem Community Angel for 2014.

The Anthem Community Angels program recognizes community "heroes" and people in our local community who have led, created or otherwise been instrumental in activities that make our community better. Examples are building a playground, raising money to help an individual or family in a difficult situation, involvement in youth athletics or other activities, or regularly volunteering with a local non-profit.

Renaud was chosen as a Community Angel for her work helping the Pirates organize the 2013 "Pink in the Rink" game, which included a number of fundraisers for a the American Cancer Society. The event, which is in its seventh year, marries two of Renaud's passions, hockey and fighting breast cancer. Her efforts include organizing raffles, recognizing breast cancer survivors, sharing educational information and supporting women undergoing cancer treatment.

"Rita Renaud's efforts to raise money for breast cancer research and educate the community is a wonderful example of supporting and inspiring the community," said Dan Corcoran, president and general manager, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Maine. "We're thrilled to recognize her and support her work."

The American Cancer Society works to help people prevent and fight cancer, as well as supporting education and research efforts.

"Many of us in our community at Mid Coast Health Services know Rita is an angel already, please award her the wings," said Maria Hyatt in her nomination.

"Rita's dedication to fighting breast cancer and her help in organizing "Pink in the Rink" night this season are a true inspiration," said Brad Church, Portland Pirates Chief Operating Officer. "We're proud to honor her as an Anthem Community Angel this season and look forward to supporting her charitable efforts in seasons to come"

As an Anthem Community Angel, Renaud was recognized at a Pirates home game on Wednesday March 26, 2014 and received a framed, autographed Pirates jersey. Anthem will also make a $500 contribution in her name to the American Cancer Society.
