Greyhounds' Matt Murray Named OHL Player of the Week

March 31, 2014 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL) News Release

Toronto, ON - The Ontario Hockey League today announced that goaltender Matt Murray of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds is the OHL Player of the Week for the playoff week ending March 30 after posting a 3-0-0-0 record including one shutout victory with a goals-against-average of 1.33 and save percentage of .957.

Murray stopped 89 shots in the final three games of the Western Conference Quarter-Finals backstopping the West Division champion Greyhounds to a five-game series win over the seventh place Owen Sound Attack. The Pittsburgh Penguins prospect made 35 saves last Monday as part of a 5-3 road win in Game 3 of the series, then stopped all 24 shots he faced in Game 4 to earn first star honours with his second career playoff shutout in the 2-0 win in Owen Sound. In Game 5 of the series on Friday, Murray had a 30-save performance as the Greyhounds defeated the Attack 6-1 to advance to the Western Conference Semi-Finals where they will face the Erie Otters beginning Wednesday night.

Murray, a 19-year-old from Thunder Bay, ON, is playing in his fourth career OHL season with the Greyhounds and earns the weekly award for the second time this season. Selected by the Penguins in the third round of the 2012 NHL Draft, Murray finished the regular season ranked second in wins with a record of 32-11-1-5 and tied for first with six shutout victories. He also posted a goals-against-average of 2.57 and a save percentage of .921 that both ranked among the top five in the OHL.
