D-Fenders Shut Down Santa Cruz in Series Finale

EL SEGUNDO, CA - The Los Angeles D-Fenders (29-17) defeated the Santa Cruz Warriors (26-20) 121-113 on Saturday night at Toyota Sports Center.

Shawne Williams got the D-Fenders out to an exceptional start in the opening quarter by totaling 16 points on six of eight from the field. Los Angeles rallied around Williams' strong play and converted seven three point field-goals to earn an early five-point edge. Despite the positive first quarter, the D-Fenders allowed Santa Cruz to take control in the second frame and convert 13 second chance points off of eight offensive rebounds. The inability to control the glass allowed the Warriors to claim a seven-point lead at the half. In total, the D-Fenders shot 47.8 percent from the floor and recorded 11 fast-break points in the first half.

The third quarter was evenly played from both teams until Los Angeles erupted for an 18-4 run over the final five minutes of the period to re-claim control of the contest. In the final quarter, the D-Fenders held Santa Cruz to 34.6 percent from the floor and never gave back the lead that they claimed in the third frame. With tonight's victory, Los Angeles moves three games ahead of Santa Cruz in the West division, and two and a half games up on Reno, who sit second behind the D-Fenders.

The D-Fenders were led by the impressive performances of Terrence Williams (29 points, five assists) and Shawne Williams (28 points, eight rebounds). Additionally, James Southerland (16 points, eight rebounds), Josiah Turner (15 points), C.J. Williams (15 points) and Josh Magette (10 points, five assists) finished in double-digits for Los Angeles.

The Warriors were paced by Lance Goulbourne (28 points, 15 rebounds) and Hilton Armstrong (19 points, 13 rebounds). Daniel Nwaelele (15 points), Cameron Jones (12 points, six rebounds, seven assists), Golden State Warriors assignment player Nemanja Nedovic (12 points, seven assists) and Mychel Thompson (10 points) also finished in double-digits for Santa Cruz.

Overall, the D-Fenders shot an even 50 percent from the floor and 90 percent from the free-throw line. Los Angeles allowed Santa Cruz to tally 62 points in the paint and 28 second chance points, but countered the Warriors with 23 fast break points on the night.

The D-Fenders next game will be against the Reno Bighorns (Sacramento Kings affiliate) on Monday, March 31st, at 7:00pm, at Toyota Sports Center, in El Segundo, California.
