Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release

BILOXI, MS - The Pensacola Ice Flyers traveled to Biloxi, Miss. for game two of their opening round of the SPHL playoffs with the Mississippi Surge. The game started off very physical and chippy but eventually settled down as the Ice Flyers won the game 4-3 in overtime.

The first period started off incredibly chippy with two fights and two sets of roughing penalties assessed in the first 5:06 of the game. Mississippi took the first lead of the game just 1:41 in after a freak bounce off the boards resulted in Lucas Labelle putting the puck through Ross MacKinnon's five hole.

Andrew Harrison scored an unassisted goal 1:46 into the second to give the Surge a 2-0 lead. Pensacola was not phased and continued to follow the game plan. It started to pay off when Keegan Flaherty scored a shorthanded goal 5:52 into the middle frame. Adam Pawlick and Steve Bergin assisted on the marker. Just 43 seconds later, Joe Caveney tied the game after a great cross pass from Ryan Salvis. Brett Lutes has the other assist on the goal.

John Dunbar gave Pensacola their first lead of the game 11:18 into the third period thanks to a power play goal that ringed in off the post. Lutes and Salvis had the assists. It only took 2:42 before the game was tied again thanks to a power play goal from Surge captain Joe Tolles. Regulation finished tied at three so the teams moved onto a sudden death overtime period following a 15 minute intermission. Late in the extra period, the Ice Flyers secured the win thanks to a goal from Podge Turnbull that was unassisted.

MacKinnon stopped 20 of the Surge's 23 shots to put the Ice Flyers through to the second round of the SPHL playoffs. For his heroics, Turnbull was named first star of the game.

The Ice Flyers will face the Knoxville Ice Bears in the SPHL semi-finals round for the third year in a row. The series schedule is still to be determined.
