March 29, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) - Cleveland Monsters News Release

David van der Gulik set a new record for goals scored in a Monsters uniform, but the Lake Erie Monsters (28-29-0-9) fell by a 5-4 score in a shootout Saturday to the Chicago Wolves (39-19-5-3) at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois. van der Gulik now has 56 goals in his career as a Monster, while Mark Olver, Troy Bourke, and Michael Schumacher also scored for the Monsters. After earning one point in the standings with the shootout loss, the Monsters end Saturday eight points behind seventh place Rockford and eighth place Charlotte in the Western Conference Standings. The Monsters have 10 games remaining, while Rockford has nine left and Charlotte has eight to play. The Monsters continue their road trip Tuesday in San Antonio at 8:00 PM.

Mark Cundari opened the scoring for Chicago on a slap shot from the right circle at 2:42 of the opening frame, but the Monsters tied the game on the power play at the 8:46 mark of the first period. Olver sent a wrist shot top-shelf from the high slot, with assists to Joey Hishon and Andrew Agozzino, to leave the score at 1-1. The goal was the 15th for Olver.

Calvin Pickard kept the score tied at 1-1 with some brilliant saves throughout the second period, and the Monsters would eventually take their first lead of the hockey game. After a fight between the Monsters Duncan Siemens and Chicago's Eric Selleck, the Monsters took the lead on the power play with a historic goal from David van der Gulik. van der Gulik tapped in a loose puck in the goal crease for his 11th goal of the season to give the Monsters a 2-1 lead; the goal was his 56th as a Monster, and made him the new leading goal scorer in Monsters history at the 14:53 mark of the second period. Agozzino and Hishon assisted on the goal.

Just 10 seconds later, Troy Bourke wristed a puck home from the right circle to extend the Monsters lead to 3-1. The goal was his second of the season, and was assisted by J.T. Wyman. Michael Schumacher gave the Monsters a 4-1 lead when he fired home a centering pass off a rush from Stefan Elliott at 5:13 of the third period for his ninth goal of the season; Guillaume Desbiens also assisted on the goal. However, Chicago's comeback would follow.

Evan Oberg scored on a blast from the right circle at 7:03 on the power play, then Cundari scored his second goal of the game from the top of the goal crease at 14:41 to cut the Monsters lead to 4-3. With 2:48 remaining in regulation, Shane Harper netted the tying goal for the Wolves, making the score 4-4 and ultimately forcing the game to overtime and a shootout.

In the shootout, Chicago scored on two-of-six chances, doubling the Monsters shootout goal total and taking the win and the second point. Shane Harper and Pat Cannone scored in the shootout for the Wolves, while Joey Hishon netted the Monsters lone shootout goal.

Calvin Pickard stopped a Monsters season-high 45 shots in the shootout loss; he is 15-16-6 on the season. Matt Climie stopped 15 of 19 Monsters shots in the Chicago net, and five of six shootout attempts; he is 9-9-1.

The Monsters continue their road trip Tuesday in San Antonio, with the game beginning at 8:00 PM Eastern and airing live on ESPN 850 WKNR.
