Spokane Chiefs News Release

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs tied Game 4 of the 1st Round of the WHL Playoffs twice before Austin Carroll would score the game-winner midway through the 3rd Period, eliminating the Chiefs from the playoffs and advancing Victoria to the 2nd Round.

Victoria jumped on the board first as Jordan Fransoo fired a shot from the blue line that beat a screened Eric Williams through the legs at the 14:48 mark of the 1st Period. Chiefs' rookie defenseman Tyson Helgesen, playing in just his 4th WHL game, scored his 1st career goal to tie the game 1-1 at the 19:02 mark. Victoria's goaltender Patrik Polivka gave a rare rebound off a Riley Whittingham shot and Helgesen slammed it home.

Ben Walker scored his 3rd goal of the playoffs just 20 seconds later as the Royals quickly regained the lead and momentum. Brandon Magee and Fransoo earned assists on the goal and the two teams headed into the 1st Intermission with Victoria leading 2-1.

The 2nd Period would be scoreless as each team exchanged chances but neither could find the net. The Chiefs held the Royals off the board on two Victoria power plays - the Chiefs would finish the game 0 for 4 on the penalty kill - while both teams managed seven shots on goal.

Connor Chartier brought the Spokane Arena crowd to their feet with a deflection goal off a Helgesen shot, tying the game at 2-2 just 3:32 into the 3rd Period. Carroll would score on a 2-on-1 at the 10:06 mark to push the Royals ahead, this time for good, as Logan Nelson would add one for the final 4-2 score.

The loss eliminates the Chiefs from the 2014 WHL Playoffs and marks Victoria's first playoff series victory in franchise history. The schedule for the 2014-15 regular season is yet to be determined and will be released mid-summer.
