Erie Explosion News Release

(Erie, PA)- The Erie Explosion (5-2) who are coming off of an impressive 65-30 win on the road over the Port Huron Patriots will get set to hit the road to Michigan for a second consecutive CIFL North Division game. The Explosion will travel to face the Detroit Thunder on Sunday March 30 th with kickoff scheduled for 4:00pm at the Melvindale Civic Center in Melvindale, Michigan. The Explosion are (2-0) all-time against the Thunder but this week's game will mark their first match-up of the 2014 season. The Thunder enter the game with an (0-5) record but took the undefeated Saginaw Sting to the wire last week on the road before falling by a score of 49-35. Detroit had an opportunity to tie the game late but Saginaw cornerback LaTreze Mushatt intercepted Thunder quarterback James King and returned it for a touchdown as time expired. The Detroit Thunder offense came alive under new quarterback James King who was making his first start of the 2014 season. The Explosion will look to win their second straight CIFL North Division game and tighten their grip on a CIFL playoff spot. Erie has outscored their opponents by a 149-42 margin since suffering a 22-21 defeat on the road to the Marion Blue Racers in Week 5.

The Explosion dominated Port Huron in all phases of the game during their week 7 win, including a breakout game by wide receiver Travis Tarpley who had 8 receptions for 103 yards and 5 touchdowns. Quarterback Aaron Smetanka continued his impressive season by completing 21 of 24 attempts for 200 yards and 6 touchdown passes. Running back Richards Stokes added 2 touchdowns on the ground as the Explosion offense scored on their first six possessions of the game. The Explosion defense forced four turnovers including two interceptions from defensive back DeQwan Young who has four in the last two Erie wins. Gannon product Evan Twombly had 5 receptions for 48 yards but suffered a knee injury late in the game and is listed as questionable for Sunday's game as he is scheduled to be evaluated during the week.

"We take our next step towards our goal of the 2014 CIFL Championship this week against Detroit. I have been very pleased with our performance over the past two weeks as we have embraced a playoff mentality each week. The Thunder are an improved team and will be a major test for us on the road this week. They gave us all we could handle last year, and I was impressed with their new quarterback and defense when I watched their game with Saginaw last week. I look forward to us having a great week of preparation this week and continuing our improvement as we drive towards our goal," commented Erie Explosion Head Coach Shawn Liotta.
