Goals Prove Elusive as 'Tips Fall Behind 2-0

EVERETT - The Everett Silvertips took an early lead and surrendered only 16 shots to the Seattle Thunderbirds, but mustered only one goal in a 3-1 loss to the Seattle Thunderbirds in Game 3 of their first-round playoff series Sunday evening at Comcast Arena. The 'Tips now trail the best-of-seven series 2-0 going into Game 3, which will be played Tuesday night at 7:05 pm at the ShoWare Center in Kent.

Carson Stadnyk scored the only goal for the Silvertips off an assist from Brayden Low in the first period, giving Everett a 1-0 edge after one. Despite five powerplays and a 27-16 shot advantage however, the 'Tips would not score again while surrendering two third-period goals in defeat. The Silvertips finished 0 for 5 on the powerplay, while Seattle was 1 for 4.

Everett got off to a good start early in the first when Brayden Low stole a loose puck in the Seattle zone and made a backhand centering pass to Carson Stadnyk, who fired a low shot past Taran Kozun to get the 'Tips on the board less than four minutes in. The Silvertips then had two opportunities on the powerplay, but were unable to extend the lead and took a 1-0 advantage into the locker room. Shots were 9-5 in favor of the 'Tips following the first 20 minutes.

Seattle tied the game early in the second with their third powerplay goal of the series when Roberts Lipsbergs received a pass from Adam Henry and blasted a shot past a diving Austin Lotz during a two-man advantage. The Silvertips were shorthanded three times in the second and successfully killed off the other two penalties. Everett built momentum as the period continued, getting the last nine shots on net and coming close to re-gaining the lead before it ended. The 'Tips continued to lead 20-11 on the shot clock heading into the final frame.

On the first shift of the third period, Brayden Low raced into the Seattle zone and fired a shot that ricocheted off the goal post. Kozun made a quick toe save on Ivan Nikolishin moments later to hold Everett at bay. With the 'Tips off to a strong start, the T-Birds used a 2-on-1 rush during 4-on-4 play to take the lead as Branden Troock got a pass from Matthew Barzal and cut to his backhand to tuck the puck in around Lotz at 2:58. Everett appeared to tie the score during a scramble in front when Jujhar Khaira stuffed the puck in under a prone Kozun, but the goal was immediately waved off as Seattle continued to lead 2-1. The Thunderbirds extended their lead to two at 8:45 when Russell Maxwell jammed a rebound past Lotz to five Seattle the necessary cushion in a 3-1 final.

Austin Lotz (0-2) stopped 13 shots in defeat, while Kozun (2-0) turned aside 26 shots on his way to being named first star for the second straight night.

The series heads back to the ShoWare Center in Kent for Game 3, which is set for Tuesday night at 7:05 pm. Radio broadcast coverage can be heard on Fox Sports 1380 AM with the pregame show starting at 6:30. The Silvertips will then return to their home ice for Game 4 Friday night at 7:35 at Comcast Arena.
