Sami Aittokallio recorded his second consecutive shutout and fourth of the season as the Lake Erie Monsters (28-28-0-7) topped the Rochester Americans (30-24-6-4) 3-0 before a crowd of 8,759 at Quicken Loans Arena. The win was the second straight for the Monsters, who have points in four straight games. Guillaume Desbiens, Stefan Elliott, and Mike Sgarbossa scored for the Monsters, who are back in action when they begin a seven-game road trip Wednesday in Chicago at 8:00 PM.
Desbiens scored on a slap shot from just inside the Rochester blue line at 16:04 of the first period. The goal was his sixth of the season, and was assisted by Colin Smith and Duncan Siemens. Just 43 seconds later, Stefan Elliott scored from the right circle- his 12th goal of the season- with assists to Mark Olver and Andrew Agozzino.
Mike Sgarbossa extended the Monsters lead to 3-0 when he streaked up the left side of the ice, through the circle, and cut to the front of the net before making a move to his backhand and scoring at 14:51 of the second period. The goal was scored on a power play, and was the fourth goal of the season for Sgarbossa. Troy Bourke and Matt Hunwick registered assists on the goal.
Aittokallio stopped eight Rochester shots in the third period to secure his fourth shutout of the season; Aittokallio stopped 23 shots and is now 12-11-2. Connor Knapp is 0-2-0 in net for Rochester; he stopped 21 of 24 shots.
The Monsters visit Chicago Wednesday at 8:00 PM Eastern. The game airs live on ESPN 850 WKNR.
NOTES: Mark Olver has assists in four straight games, and now has a goal and five assists over his last four contests; Olver's four-game assist streak ties Karl Stollery, who has two four-game assist streaks this season, for the longest assist streak for a Monster this season... Colin Smith has assists in three straight games... Troy Bourke has four points in his first two AHL games... Stefan Elliott has three goals in his last five games... The consecutive shutouts for the Monsters are the first back-to-back shutouts since 2/25/09 against Syracuse and 2/27/09 against Toronto; Jason Bacashihua was the goalie for each game in the Monsters last instance of back-to-back shutouts... The Monsters are 5-3-0-1 in March, 15-11-0-6 against the North Division, and 5-3-0-1 against Rochester this season... The Monsters were 1-4 on the power play, and 6-6 on the penalty kill... The Monsters were 10-10 on the penalty kill combined over Friday and Sunday's games.
