Vipers Fall 137-133 to Austin

HIDALGO, Texas - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (29-16) fell 137-133 to the Austin Toros (17-27) tonight at State Farm Arena.

Darius Morris led the Vipers with 31 points, followed by Bo Spencer with 23 points. Tony Bishop and Troy Daniels each added 19 points. Robert Covington scored 15 points and 9 rebounds.

Courtney Fells led the Toros with 44 points. Flip Murray scored 26 points. Jonathan Simmons added a double-double 19 points and 11 rebounds. Terrance Woodbury scored 16 points, and Jazwyn Cowan scored 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The Toros took an early 8-0 lead on a jump shot from Cowan and consecutive three-pointers from Murray and Fells. A dunk from Jamelle Hagins put the Vipers on the board 8-2. Despite closing their deficit to one point three times during the second quarter, Austin held the lead throughout the first half. At halftime, the Vipers trailed the Toros 76-66.

RGV fought back throughout the third quarter. Covington sank a shot from behind the arc to tie the game at 82 points with 7:14 on the clock. Murray followed with two free throws to keep the Toros ahead 84-82. The score tied three more times before a three-pointer by Spencer put the Vipers up 99-96 to send them on a 9-3 run to close the third quarter with a 108-99 lead.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Fells connected on a three-point shot to steal the 119-117 advantage for Austin. RGV was not able to reclaim the lead and fell 137-133 to the Toros.
