Mississippi Surge News Release

Biloxi, MS - Two time Olympic Gold Medalist Shannon Szabados officially made league history on March 15, when she became the first female goalie to start a game in the Southern Professional Hockey League.

Bombarded with local, national, and even international media attention, Shannon Szabados suited up for a tough matchup against the red hot Knoxville Ice Bears. Despite an early 2 goal lead and 28 stops by Szabados, the Cottonmouths fell their rival. After the game, the newest Cottonmouth tweeted, "Had a ton of fun in my first pro game! Thank you to my @cottonmouths teammates & organization for making it a memorable 1! #CanadianAnthem"

The Cottonmouths next stop is Biloxi, Mississippi, where Szabados & goalie partner Andrew Loewen will suit up to face the Surge on Friday, March 21st.

Surge fans have already taken to twitter, Facebook, and even instagram, declaring their anticipation for Friday's game against Columbus. Whether Shannon Szabados will stop pucks between the pipes on Friday or not, hockey fans in South Mississippi will gladly partake in sharing a moment of SPHL history.
