Bears, Four Other Teams Separated by Six Points

March 18, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Hershey Bears News Release

The Hershey Bears Hockey Club picked up three out of a possible six points on the weekend, and continue to sit just outside of the Eastern Conference playoff picture.

The weekend began with a visit to take on the Syracuse Crunch on Friday. Newly-acquired forwards Chris Brown and Kris Newbury combined to score on the only power play of the game to give Hershey the lead. Syracuse tied the game on a Charles Landry shot that deflected past Philipp Grubauer, and then took the lead on a goal by Dalton Smith scored off of a second-period faceoff win. Matt Watkins again leveled the contest at 9:13 of the third, but former Bears forward Jon DiSalvatore tallied the winner 1:50 into overtime, sending the Crunch to a 3-2 victory.

The Bears fell behind 1-0 to the Adirondack Phantoms on Saturday in front of 10,995 fans at GIANT Center, the largest crowd of the season. Derek Mathers scored for the visitors, but Hershey would rally for four unanswered goals to take a much-needed 4-1 win. Brandon Segal, Ryan Stoa, Michael Latta and Brown all netted goals for the Bears, while Nicolas Deschamps posted three assists. David Leggio made 29 saves for his 17th win.

On Sunday, the Norfolk Admirals - who had been held to just one goal in their last seven periods - jumped out to 2-0 and 3-1 leads, before John Gibson stopped all 16 third-period shots - and 35 overall - to help the Admirals hang on for a 3-2 victory. Latta and Tyson Strachan scored for Hershey. Grubauer made 33 saves in the loss. HERSHEY BEARS NEWS AND NOTES

A LATTA HARD WORK: Bears C Michael Latta loves playing the Norfolk Admirals, as he scored his third goal in as many games over ten days against the division opponent in Sunday's setback. Latta leads the season series with six points (3-3-6) and has points in all five games he has played against the Admirals. He also has four goals and one assist in his last five games overall.

CHOCOLATETOWN BROWN: Newly-acquired forward Chris Brown started off his tenure with the Chocolate and White on a strong note, scoring a goal in each of his first two games with the team. Brown's power-play goal on Friday started the scoring at Syracuse, while his goal on Saturday against Adirondack capped off the team's victory.

NEWBIE NEWBURY: Veteran C Kris Newbury earned an assist in his Bears debut on Friday at Syracuse, setting up Chris Brown's power play goal.

SEGAL BACK ON TOP: RW Brandon Segal snapped a streak of 16 games without a goal when he scored the game-tying marker on Saturday against Adirondack. He added an assist to earn first-star honors in the game, and moved back into the Bears' scoring lead with 41 points (15-26- 41). Segal has also matched his AHL career high for assists in a season and has produced his third-highest point total since turning pro.

STRACHAN STRIKES SHORTHANDED: D Tyson Strachan scored a long-range shorthanded goal on Sunday, when his clearing bid from the defensive zone faceoff dot snuck past Norfolk Admirals G John Gibson in the second period. The tally was the Bears' seventh on home ice, which ranks third in the league. Strachan is also the first Bears defenseman to score a shorthanded goal since Patrick McNeill's tally against Adirondack on March 23, 2013.

100 FOR STOA: Sunday's game against Norfolk was C Ryan Stoa's 100th in a Hershey sweater. Among players that started the season in Chocolatetown, Stoa ranks third in scoring with 35 points (13-22-25). In his 100-game Bears tenure, he has produced 54 points (24-30-54).

BEARS BULLETS:

- Hershey's 20 home wins rank tied for second in the Eastern Conference and tied for third in the AHL.

- The Bears are 8-2-0-1 in the final day of a stretch of three games in three days. Hershey visits Manchester for their 12th opportunity this Sunday; the Monarchs lead the league in home-ice wins (24) and fewest home-ice regulation losses (six).

- The Bears are 2-1-0-1 against their upcoming weekend opponents this season, and are 4-3-0-1 against the Atlantic Division.

- The Bears welcomed 21,768 fans to GIANT Center this past weekend, and pace the league yet again with an average of 9,548.
