SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs have signed assistant coach Jeff Cowan to a two-year contract extension.

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. The deal runs through the 2015-16 season.

Cowan, 37, was hired by the Sea Dogs in November, 2013.

He began his professional playing career with the American Hockey League's Saint John Flames, suiting up for 209 games over four seasons between 1996 and 2000.

The native of Scarborough, Ontario, spent parts of eight seasons in the National Hockey League with the Calgary Flames, Atlanta Thrashers, Los Angeles Kings and Vancouver Canucks, registering 47 goals and 81 points in 413 career games.

He also played three more seasons in the AHL, and another in Germany, before retiring in 2012.
