Steelheads Preview

Mississauga Steelheads News Release

MISSISSAUGA, ON -- One game remaining, one point needed! This Sunday afternoon, the Mississauga Steelheads (24-37-1-5, 8th in Eastern Conference) host the Kingston Frontenacs (38-23-3-3, 3rd in Eastern Conference) in their final regular season contest! Kingston has clinched the third seed in the Eastern Conference, however Mississauga will look to secure a spot in this year's playoffs with a single point.

As we determine the final seedings for this season's playoffs, there will be some scoreboard-watching happening tomorrow afternoon as the Niagara IceDogs (23-25-3-6, 7th in Eastern Conference) host the Peterborough Petes (32-29-0-5, 6th in Eastern Conference) and the Ottawa 67's (23-28-3-3, 9th in Eastern Conference) visit the North Bay Battalion (37-24-4-2, 2nd in Eastern Conference).

With the Belleville Bulls being officially eliminated in Oshawa last night, the remaining playoff scenarios are as follows:

- If Mississauga wins AND Niagara loses in regulation time or overtime/shootout - STEELHEADS FINISH 7TH

- If Mississauga loses in overtime/shootout AND Niagara loses in regulation time - STEELHEADS FINISH 7TH

- If Mississauga wins AND Niagara wins - STEELHEADS FINISH 8TH

- If Mississauga loses AND Ottawa loses - STEELHEADS FINISH 8TH

- If Mississauga loses AND Ottawa wins - STEELHEADS PLAY OTTAWA IN TIEBREAKER FOR 8TH

Steelheads Silence IceDogs

One night after the IceDogs fought back to win in a shootout, the teams met in the second leg on their home-and-home. With Niagara bussing fans into the Hershey Centre, a definite playoff buzz was in the air leading up to puck drop. With the intensity carrying over from Thursday night, both teams got chippy early, exchanging special teams opportunities. Andrew Goldberg would be the one to break the scoreless draw at 15:17 of the first period. Niagara came out of the first intermission looking for an equalizer, and it was Billy Jenkins who would jump on a turnover to square the game at 1. The goaltenders would take over for the rest of the game, with no goals coming until the shootout. Following a five-rounder in Niagara on Thursday, the Steelheads made quick work of Brent Moran, as Lucas Venuto and Bryson Cianfrone both buried their opportunities, while Spencer Martin turned away both IceDogs to give the Steelheads the victory.

Steelheads Fall To Frontenacs

The Kingston Frontenacs struck just 19 seconds into the game at home, putting the Steelheads behind the eight ball early. Despite exchanging goals until the midway point of the second, the Steelheads could not keep pace with the Frontenacs attack, going down 5-3 to enter the third period. Despite outshooting Kingston, the Trout could not get on the board in the third period, falling to the third-seed in the East.
