News and Notes Near the End of the Indoor Season

March 14, 2014 - Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL)
Dayton Demonz News Release

(Dayton, Ohio) The Dayton Demonz played a dominant 3rd period scoring 3 unanswered goals to pull out a 6-4 come from behind victory tonight over the Watertown Privateers. In a game that went back and forth in the first two periods of play, and Watertown dominating in stretches.

Tonight marked the first game of the season for Demonz coach Trevor Karasiewicz, who saw his first playing action in almost a year. Karasiewicz although showing some "rust" at times, controlled the face-off circle, and was rewarded with the Demonz 6th goal of the night (an insurance goal) with under a minute left to play in the contest.

Watertown got on the board 33 seconds in the game on Matt Graham's goal to take the 1-0 lead. Brian Marks of the Demonz tied the game less than a minute later. With Watertown on the power-play, the Demonz had the only scoring chance between the two teams, Dayton's penalty killing unit proved fatal to the Privateers as Ahmed Mahfouz, the Federal Hockey League's leading scorer ripped a shot into the Watertown net giving the Demonz the 2-1, a little over mid-way through the initial frame. Dayton took the 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

In the 2nd period, Watertown controlled the play taking a 4-2 lead, if not for the strong goaltending by Demonz goalie Jeff Rose, Dayton would have found themselves further behind, as he was tested on many point-blank shots, with defensive lapses by Demonz, leaving Privateers alone and untouched in the slot area. The Privateers scored 3 goals in a two-minute span led by Brad Ritter's two goals and the other coming off the stick of James Gordon. Demon August Aiken's goal late in the period, made it close cutting the score to 4-3 late in the period, this gave Dayton a chance to stay in the game and stop the bleeding, and an opportunity for Dayton to re-think their game going into the final intermission.

The final period Dayton dominated the Privateers. The Demonz would outshoot the Privateers 15-5 in the 3rd period. The Demonz three unanswered goals in the last frame were scored by Jesse Felten who tied the game at 4-4. Dayton would take the lead 5-4 on Casey Mignone (game winner). With under a minute left in the period, Karasiewicz's goal provided the cushion the Demonz needed with a two goal lead, in the tightly fought contest making it final with Dayton's 6 to Watertown's 4. With the strong Dayton 3rd period, the Demonz were able to finish the game outshooting Watertown 34-32.
