Blazers Drop 4-1 Decision to Rockets
March 13, 2014 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Kamloops Blazers News Release
The Kamloops Blazers (13-51-2-3) returned home for the first time in nearly a month and dropped a 4-1 decision to the Kelowna Rockets (55-11-0-4) on Wednesday night.
The first period was scoreless, but it was entertaining. Both the Blazers and Rockets had their chances in the period as Jackson Whistle and Bolton Pouliot were solid for their respective teams. Joe Kornelsen and Deven Sideroff had the best chances for the Blazers as they were denied in tight. The Rockets outshot the Blazers 12-11 in the period.
The Rockets took it to the Blazers in the second period and showed why they are the WHL's top team. They scored twice as Nick Merkley finished off an odd man rush for his 24th of the season. Ryan Olsen tallied the other goal as he walked in untouched before sliding a puck past Pouliot for his 29th goal of the year. The Rockets outshot the Blazers 13-1 in the period and had a 2-0 lead heading into the final frame.
The Blazers made a game of it in the third period. Bolton Pouliot was outstanding in goal making plenty of highlight reel saves to keep the Blazers in this one. The Blazers made it 2-1 on a turnover as Nick Chyzowski fed Eric Krienke for his third goal of the season midway through the third period. Pouliot continued to make save after save but was eventually beaten on a rebound as Tyrell Goulbourne scored his 17th goal of the season. The Rockets eventually added an empty net goal to make it a 4-1 final.
Bolton Pouliot was outstanding in goal making 40 saves on the night, while Jackson Whistle was solid with 18 saves for the Rockets.
The Blazers will conclude their season this weekend as they host the Prince George Cougars on Friday night and will play in Prince George on Saturday.
