Portland Pirates News Release

Lewiston, ME-The Springfield Falcons defeated the Portland Pirates 9-3 on Sunday afternoon at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. The Falcons had goals from 8 different players, went 3-3 on the power-play, and got 27 saves from Mike McKenna on the way to the victory. Both Mark Visentin and Louis Domingue saw action in net for the Pirates, with Visentin making 14 saves and Domingue stopping 8 shots. The 9 goals allowed were the most allowed at home in Pirates franchise history.

The Falcon started scoring early, tallying 4 goals in the first period. The first tally of the afternoon came 4:21 into the game with Springfield in the midst of a line change. Patrick McNeill moved in on the left side and let go an off-angle shot that found its way through Mark Visentin. Just 32 seconds later, Sean Collins doubled the Falcons lead when he received a perfect breakaway pass from Matt Taormina, and beat Visentin through the five-hole. The lead was extended to 3-0 when Dana Tyrell scored from the high slot while on the power-play with just over 12 minutes left in the period. Darryl Boyce would close out the scoring for Springfield in the 1st as he fired a shot through traffic and into the back of the net with 3:06 left, Boyce's 11th of the season was also on the power-play.

Louis Domingue replaced Visentin in net to start the 2nd period for the Pirates, and the Pirates registered their first goal of the game just 3:02 into the period. Off a face-off draw, a loose puck ended up on Brett Hextall's stick and he ripped a snap shot past McKenna's blocker. The goal is Hextall's 10th of the season, making him the 10th Pirate to reach the double-digit mark in goals this year and giving him a career high in all three scoring categories this season. Assists on Hextall's tally went to Kyle Hagel and Ethan Werek.

Springfield turned up the pressure on Domingue following Hextall's goal, scoring three goals in just over 5 minutes, extending their lead to 7-1. Springfield's 5th goal of the night was another power-play tally, this one off the stick of Michael Chaput, 9:28 into the period. After Boyce was sent to the box for interference, the Pirates fell victim to an unfortunate bounce. Taormina cleared the puck high off the glass, and when the puck hit the ice, it took a Springfield bounce over Brendan Shinnimin's stick, and onto the stick of Andrew Joudrey, who went in alone on a breakaway and beat Domingue just under the pad for a short-handed goal. Austin Madaisky would close out the 2nd period scoring with a slap shot that found its way through traffic and into the top corner past Domingue.

The Falcons extended their lead early in the third, with 2 goals from Jack Skille at the 1:20 and 1:46 marks. With the score 9-1, the Pirates swapped goaltenders again, with Visentin relieving Domingue. Springfield would not score again, but the Pirates would add 2 more. The first one came from Tim Kennedy, his first of the year and first with the Pirates since the 2008-09 season, on a nice feed from Connor Murphy at the 4:53 mark of the period. Brandon Yip would wrap up all the scoring when he buried his 7th of the year with just over 4 minutes left to play.

With the win the Springfield Falcons improve to 36-18-1-5, while the Portland Pirates fall to 21-28-2-8.
