Surge Fall 4-0 against a Streaking Rivermen Squad in Peoria

Mississippi Surge News Release

Biloxi, MS - On a chilly sunday afternoon in Peoria, Illinois, the Surge fought hard in this weekend's rubber match versus the Rivermen. In arguably the fastest paced game this weekend, Peoria continued their hot streak scoring two goals in the first period and another two goals in the second. Robert Vanwynsberghe and Garrett Vermeersch scored the first two goals for Peoria. Parker Stanfeild, coming off a multi-point game last night, picked up where he left off scoring twice for the Rivermen in the second period. Stanfeild also picked up an assist.

Tension was mounting and tempers were flaring all weekend, manifesting itself in the second period when Surge Defenseman, Bill Baker was penalized two minutes for slashing, an additional two minutes for un-sportsman like conduct, and after jawing with the linesman, received a ten minute misconduct penalty. During a squabble in the last four seconds of the second period, Baker, while still in the penalty box, was cited an additional 10 minute game misconduct for verbal abuse of the officials, ending his day on the ice. Today's game marks the 9th straight that Baker has had at least one penalty, the highest streak in the league.

Just when you might have thought the frustration cumulated itself in the second, the third period brought three sets of fights, even more pushing and shoving, and even more penalty minutes. The final game of the weekend ended 4-0.

The number one net minder in the SPHL, Kyle Rank picked up his 12th win of the year and his 8th shutout this season. On the opposite side, Dan Clarke started in his first game since March 1st. Clarke went 15 for 19, and was pulled early in the second after Peoria extended their lead to 4 in favor of Mathieu Dugas, who went 22 for 22 on the night.

The Surge, fourth in the league on power play's, only had one chance with a man advantage, and were not able to convert, but the Surge penalty kill once again shined, not allowing a goal in six opportunities for the Rivermen.

Well over half the Surge roster, eleven total Surge players were penalized including: Joe Tolles, Kyle Kudroch, Bill Baker, Jordan Peddle, Justin MacDonald, Evan Zych, Tyler Turcotte, Nate Peterson, Lucas LaBelle, Luke Lynes, and Mathieu Dugas. The heated matchup saw 30 penalty minutes on the Surge just in the second period, totaling 59 minutes at the final buzzer, the most by a wide margin, in any game for the Surge this season.

The Surge will return to Biloxi for rest of the week, before their final road game of the season against the RiverKings on Friday, March 14. Following the matchup versus the RiverKings, the Surge will finish their final four regular season games at home.
