Mcdiarmid's Goal Not Enough In 3-1 Loss To Kenai River

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - Luke McDiarmid scored his first goal of the year for a late first period lead, however, Jacob Wolter tallied the game winning goal 8:30 into the final period of play as Kenai River swept the Corpus Christi IceRays with a 3-1 win in front of 4,324 fans at the American Bank Center on Saturday night.

As time winded down in the first period of action Luke McDiarmid had a great scoring chance that was denied by Kenai River goaltender Kris Oldham. However McDiarmid got another chance as Tony Roisum put a shot that was also stopped however the rebound trickled in front of the net as McDiarmid gathered it and fired in his first goal of the season with 1:59 left in the opening period of play. Assists were credited to Roisum and Malo Ville.

As the first period came to a close Jesse Shelton took a penalty that carried over to the start of the second frame. Kenai River didn't take long to convert on the man advantage and even the score. Gustav Berglund gathered the puck at the point as the Brown Bears set up the power-play.. Berglund fed a shot through a screen that was deflected by Frankie Spellman on its way to the net and sailed by goaltender Forbes Ploszaj to tie the game 1-1 just 29 seconds into the period. The secondary assist was credited to Albin Karlsson.

Kenai River put two in the net during the final period of play to seal the 3-1 victory over the 'Rays. Frankie Spellman continued his excellent weekend with the heads up assist on the go-ahead goal for the Brown Bears at the 8:30 mark of the third frame. Spellman was positioned on the right wing wall and Jacob Wolter flew to the front of the net as Spellman hit him with a hard pass. Wolter fired the puck over a diving Forbes Ploszaj and went flying into the end wall but would be ok. The goal was the eventual game winner and was assisted by Spellman and Connor Deal.

Alec Butcher finished off the scoring for the Brown Bears as he snapped a shot by Ploszaj from the offensive zone hash marks with just 3:21 remaining in the game for the 3-1 lead. Assists were handed out to Sebastian Fuchs and Albin Karlsson.

The IceRays were on the power-play late in regulation with the goalie pulled and could not force a comeback.. Forbes Ploszaj stopped 24 shots in the loss.

The IceRays return home on Wednesday afternoon for a mid-week battle hosting Rio Grande Valley in the ninth game of the South Texas Vo-Tech Cup Series. Puck drops at 7:05PM, coverage begins at 6:50PM with the IceRays Pregame Show on sportsjuice.com, ustream.com, and fasthockey.com.
