Bulls Stopped Short in OT 3-2

March 8, 2014 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Topeka Pilots News Release

It took a couple of extra minutes to settle this late season grudge match between division rivals. In the end, the Runners skated away with a rousing 3-2 win against Amarillo in overtime.

Sam Rennaker started the scoring with a goal at 10:24 in the first. Ryan Polin helped out with an assist on the netter, the first of two points he would tally on the night to lead the team in scoring.

In the second, Tyler Poulsen checked in with a power play goal past Paul Berrafato and the Runners were in control 2-0. The Bulls cut the lead in half on a power play of their own midway through the period, setting the stage for a tight final frame.

The Runners D and PJ Bridges managed to hold the Bulls at bay until the final minutes of the third when James Ring received a questionable cross checking call. On the ensuing penalty kill, the Bulls pulled their goalie for an extra attacker and capitalized in the two-man advantage with a game tying score with 24 seconds left.

In extra time, Cody Champagne stepped up big with the game winner at 2:03, firing in a rebound off a shot from Daniel Rzavsky. The win closes the gap between first and second to just four points and restored the Runners four-point lead over third-place Rio Grande Valley.

The Runners and the Bulls hit the ice again tomorrow night at 7pm. The boys return Monday night for a two-game set against the Wichita Falls Wildcats at Landon Arena. Tickets to these games and season tickets for the 2014-2015 season are now on sale.
