Mill Rats Upset in Playoff Opener

(Saint John, NB): The Saint John Mill Rats rallied from a double-digit deficit to force overtime, but it was all for nothing as they were upset in their playoff opener, 113-110, by the Halifax Rainmen.

Saint John did themselves no favours going 23-40 from the free throw line, and were outrebounded 63-54.

Trailing 96-85 with 3:46 remaining in the game, the Mill Rats finished on a 15-4 run to force overtime 100 a piece. Tyrone Levett nailed two threes in the dying seconds to give the Mill Rats a second lease on life.

In the overtime they held a 106-104 lead with 1:29 left before a 6-0 run by Halifax gave them a commanding 110-106 lead with 16 seconds left. Doug Herring only made 1 out of a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 110-107. Brian Addison made 1 free throw and Anthony Anderson drained a three pointer to trim the lead to 111-110 with 6.3 seconds. Jason Williams made the final two free throws for the final margin.

Tyrone Levett led Saint John with 27 points, Doug Herring Jr 23, Anthony Anderson 19, Eric Crookshank 18, and Jermaine Blackburn 13. Jason Williams led Halifax with 27.

Game 2 of the best-of-five series is Thursday night at 7PM at Harbour Station. Game 3 is set for Friday night 7PM at the Metro Centre.
