Connecticut Sun News Release

Washington, D.C. - Safe Kids Worldwide announced today that it will partner with WNBA all-star Tina Charles and her Hopey's Heart Foundation to host the Safe Kids Sports Safety Clinic. The clinic will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2014 from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. at Charles W. Flanagan High School in Pembroke Pines, Florida. More than 300 local youth athletes, coaches and parents will be in attendance to learn about concussions, overuse injuries, the importance of AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators), CPR, pre-participation exams and being prepared with first aid.

The Hopey's Heart Foundation was created by Ms. Charles in honor of her late aunt Maureen "Hopey" Vaz, who died of multiple organ failure on March 9, 2013.

"Every year, 1.35 million children are seen in emergency departments for sports-related injuries," said Kate Carr, president and CEO of Safe Kids Worldwide. "We're proud to partner with the Hopey's Heart Foundation and Tina Charles to raise awareness about sports injury prevention and the importance of having AEDs at every school and rec center across the country. We know with a few simple steps we can keep our young athletes healthy, active and playing the games they love."

"It's great to partner with Safe Kids to give so many young athletes the opportunity to learn about preventable injuries and AEDs," said Ms. Charles. "To honor the memory of my late aunt, Maureen "˜Hopey' Vaz, is of deep significance to myself, family and foundation. HHF is committed to saving young lives and bringing awareness to improving the health of students and amateur athletes throughout the world."

The Safe Kids sports clinic is sponsored by BAND-AID®, Depuy Synthes, Heartsmart.com, Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital Department of Orthopedic Surgery's U18 Sports Medicine Program, Safe Kids Broward and Charles W. Flanagan High School.
