Pats defeat Moose Jaw

March 1, 2014 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Regina Pats News Release

First Period

The Pats came into their final contest against the Warriors looking for both a season series sweep and to clinch a playoff spot. Moose Jaw had an early opportunity with the man advantage, but couldn't capitalize. The Pats followed up with a chance of their own struck for the opening goal. Dmitry Sinitsyn carried the puck into the middle of the ice, then slid it back across to Morgan Klimchuk who ripped home the one timer for a 1-0 Pats lead. The Blue and White added some insurance with some luck when Kyle Burroughs' point shot redirected into the goal off a Warrior defenceman. The Warriors cut into the lead late in the frame when Jesse Forsberg pounded a long shot off the pads of Daniel Wapple, leaving a rebound out in front for Sam Fioretti to scoop up and deposit behind Daniel Wapple. The goal ended up being shorthanded as a four-on-four segment came to a close moments before Fioretti scored. Regina restored the two goal lead with another powerplay goal as Colby Williams let a shot go from the point and it was tipped by Dyson Stevenson for the over-age forward's 35th marker of the season and a 3-1 Pats lead. Both Colby Williams and Dmitry Sinitsyn had a pair of powerplay assists in the frame.

Second Period

The officials continued to send players to the penalty box and both sides took advantage of the extra ice. The Pats struck for two goals on the man advantage with Klimchuk getting his second of the night and Dmitry Sinitsyn ripping a low shot by Zachary Sawchenko to give the Pats a 5-1 lead. Moose Jaw started to chip away late in the frame with some powerplays of their own. On a five-on-three advantage, Brayden Point dropped to Tanner Eberle and he snapped it by Wapple to get the Warriors on the board in the frame. Point factored in again as he grabbed a rebound, with the Warriors once again on the powerplay, and sent it to the back of the net to bring the scoreboard to a 5-3 count in favour of the Pats through forty minutes.

Third Period

Trailing by two heading into the final frame, the Warriors opened up with a great chance to come even with four minutes of continuous powerplay time, but the Pats got through the shorthanded situation unscathed. The Blue and White would add to their lead when Dmitry Sinitsyn slapped a shot by Sawchenko for his second of the game and fourth point of the night. The final goal of the evening came off the stick of Chandler Stephenson when Braden Christoffer spied him open in front of the net for a quick strike and a 7-3 final score in favour of the Pats. With the victory, the Pats clinched their spot in the 2013-14 WHL Playoffs.
