HIDALGO, Texas, February 26, 2014 - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (25-10) cruised past the Santa Cruz Warriors (19-15) 138-124 tonight at State Farm Arena.
Houston Rockets assignee Robert Covington led the Vipers with a double-double 28 points, 13 rebounds and was 6-for-9 from three-point range. Troy Daniels added 26 points, connecting on 4-of-8 three-point shots. Kenny Kadji scored 20 points. Gary Talton recorded a double-double 15 points and 12 rebounds. Tim Ohlbrecht tallied 12 points.
Joe Alexander came off the bench to lead the Warriors with 24 points. Seth Curry scored 23 points. Dominic McGuire added a double-double 17 points and 12 rebounds. Cameron Jones scored 16 points.
McGuire started the game with a three-pointer to put the Warriors on the board 3-0. Daniels responded with a shot from behind the arc to tie the game at three points. Curry connected on a three-pointer that gave Santa Cruz its last lead of the game 6-5 with 9:18 remaining in the first quarter. At the end of the quarter, the Vipers held a 36-29 lead.
Midway through the second quarter, Covington gave RGV its largest lead of the first half, 64-48, with a layup and a shot at the free throw line. At the half, RGV held a 77-64 advantage.
The Warriors fought back at the beginning of the second half to close their deficit to 86-82 on a jump shot from McGuire midway through the third quarter. Kadji responded with a layup to send the Vipers on an 11-0 run to build their lead to 97-81. At the end of the third quarter, RGV was on top 109-92.
RGV maintained control through the fourth quarter and claimed the game 138-124.
The Vipers hit the road this weekend to face the Tulsa 66ers Saturday, March 1 at 7 p.m. (CT) at the SpiritBank Event Center.
