Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Fayetteville SwampDogs have announced the signing of University of South Alabama shortstop Drew LaBounty.

As a senior at Pensacola Cathlolic High School last year, LaBounty helped lead the team to a perfect 30-0 record, as the Crusaders captured their first USA Today National Championship.

LaBounty hit .511 on the season, collected 27 RBIs, had a .585 on-base percentage and was a perfect 22-for-22 in stolen base attempts.

He combines his speed and keen eye with plus bat control - LaBounty walked 20 times and registered only five strikeouts in 119 plate appearances - to be an offensive force at a prime position.

So far in 2014, LaBounty has started all six games for the Jaguars without committing an error.

"LaBounty will make an immediate impact in the middle infield this summer," said SwampDogs head coach David Tufo. "He had tremendous success at the high school level and South Alabama has him starting every game as a true freshman. That's a huge compliment to his abilities and we are looking forward to an incredible summer with him in our lineup."

The Fayetteville SwampDogs are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, entering their 14th season in the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 18th season in 2014, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,100 alumni drafted and 65 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
