RECAP: Pirates Fight Past Phantoms for First Home Win of 2014

February 16, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Portland Pirates News Release

Lewiston, ME- The Portland Pirates used two power play goals to beat the Adirondack Phantoms 2-0 Sunday afternoon to earn their first home win of 2014. The two teams combined for 304 penalty minutes, a new Pirates record for combined penalty minutes in a game. Chris Brown and Brendan Shinnimin notched the Pirates goals and Louis Domingue made 28 saves to earn the win, sharing the shutout with Mark Visentin.

Through the first two periods, both goalies were playing strong, pitching shutouts and turning aside everything that came their way.

But finally, less than two minutes into the third period, Brown broke the scoreless tie when he scored on the power play. With Oliver Lauridsen in the box for holding, Brandon Gormley let loose a shot from the point that was knocked down in front, but Brown was there to collect and cashed in with his 13th goal of the year. With the power play goal, the Pirates have now scored at least one goal with the man advantage in each of their last seven home games.

The Phantoms responded with some good pressure, but the Pirates weathered the storm and eventually extended their lead at 13:07, again on the power play, when Brendan Shinnimin found a rebound of his own. A shot from the point bounced high into the air before landing amongst a mass of players where Shinnimin eventually slammed it home to give the Pirates the 2-0 lead.

Then, desperation mode kicked in for the Phantoms and anger boiled over. It started off with Chris Summers laying a huge hit on Jason Akeson at the Pirates blue line, a big, clean body check that left Akeson a little wobbly. Then, with 22 seconds left, Ben Holmstrom plowed Shinnimin into the boards, causing a full out melee on the ice, including both goalies, Heeter and Domingue. Then, Kyle Hagel got into his second fight of the night, going toe-to-toe with Zack Fitzgerald.

In the end, the teams combined for 12 fights and 299 penalty minutes, nearly 80 more penalty minutes than the Pirates and Binghamton Senators combined for on February 1st, and the most combined penalty minutes combined in a Pirates game all-time, surpassing the previous record of 273 set on Nov 25, 2006 against Providence.
