Mississauga Steelheads News Release
MISSISSAUGA, ON -- Looking to bounce back from a loss at home this past weekend, the Mississauga Steelheads travelled to 'The Aud' for a Valentine's Date with Scott Teskey and the Kitchener Rangers.
The former Steelhead was the first player to find an opportunity, breaking through with an early chance in the first. Fortunately for the Spencer Martin and the Steelheads, Teskey's shot could not evade the post, keeping the game scoreless early. Brett Foy found himself with a chance to give Mississauga the lead shortly after, however he was hauled to the ice, sending the Trout to the PP. Unfortunately, they could not capitalize, and the momentum shifted in Kitchener's favour. Justin Bailey found himself with a chance of his own, however he was turned away by Martin to keep the Rangers off the board. Despite strong pressure by Mississauga midway through the first, they would find themselves shorthanded; a controversial goal would break the tie and give the Rangers a 1-0 lead. The Rangers would control the play to end the first, but strong goaltending by Martin kept them from any further goals to end the first frame.
The Steelheads started the second period aggressively, controlling the physical play and establishing a forecheck early in the period. After the game's first of four fights, a "whistle-less" first half of the period was capped off by a great chance for Josh Burnside, who jumped on a Sean Day rebound but was unable to find the back of the net. Despite keeping the pressure on, it would be the Rangers adding to their lead on a wrister from Logan Schmidt with 7 minutes to play in the second. Just 14 seconds later, a turnover deep in the Steelheads zone would end up behind Martin, giving Kitchener a 3-0 lead. The Rangers would add another before the end of the period to head into the intermission with a commanding lead.
Chase Marchand slid between the pipes to start the third period, and looked strong early, turning away a number of Kitchener shots. Following another tilt, Kitchener would tack on another goal before the Steelheads found themselves on penalty kill duty. Unfortunately, the Trout would be unable to generate any offense, finishing the game with only 13 shots in a shutout loss.
