Alberta Golden Bears' Sean Ringros Named Graduate of the Month

Edmonton, AB - Canada West Universities Athletic Association and the Western Hockey League proudly announce that former Medicine Hat Tigers forward Sean Ringrose from the University of Alberta Golden Bears is WHL men's hockey Graduate of the Month for January.

This marks the first time an Alberta Golden Bears student-athlete has won the honour since goaltender Kurtis Mucha claimed the honour in February 2013.

A two-year member of the WHL, Ringrose becomes the 37th monthly winner for the Golden Bears whose student-athletes have won the award more than any other conference school.

The award is voted on by all eight Canada West men's hockey coaches. Each monthly winner during the season receives a $500 cheque towards the cost of education, a plaque, a letter from WHL Commissioner Ron Robison and a computer bag. Canada West will also honour recipient at a home game, with an invitation to appear on the WHL Radio Show.

Each season from 2009-10 to 2011-12, Ringrose was one the Canada West men's hockey players to receive a WHL Scholarship.

Ringrose, a fifth-year Physical Education & Recreation student playing his hometown of Edmonton, is the active Canada West leader in goals and points, while sitting second on the active list in assists and games played. In five seasons for the Golden Bears, currently first in the conference and ranked #1 in Canadian Interuniversity Sport, Ringrose has 56 goals and 81 assists for 137 points in 132 regular season games. He another 6-9-15 in 17 playoff games.

"Sean had a strong month in January because of his competitiveness and consistency," said Golden Bears head coach Ian Herbers. "He has been a leader for us on and off the ice. He has taken the team on his shoulders to start the 2nd half of the season and has helped to place the team in a good position down the stretch drive. Sean is never satisfied and is always looking to improve and elevate his game."

During his Canada West career, Ringrose has been a part of three Canada West championship teams, traveled three times to CIS Nationals, finishing second with Alberta in 2010, was named a Second Team All-Star in 2011-12 and made the CIS All-Rookie team in 2009-10.

Maybe most notably is that, in 2010-11, Ringrose won the conference's UBC Hockey Alumni Trophy for sportsmanship and ability, a tribute to his skill and style on the ice.

During the month on January, Ringrose helped lead the top-ranked Golden Bears to a 6-0-1 record, picking up six goals and eight assists for 14 points in the process. In seven conference games, the 25-year-old was named the game's 1st Star on three occasions and scored a late game-tying goal to give Alberta a point in the standings during their only defeat of the month.

Ringrose, who stands 5-10, is fifth in league scoring through February 1st, with 11 goals and 28 points.

During two full seasons in the Western Hockey League, the Edmonton product produced 38 goals and 55 assists in 140 regular season games, including a 25-point improvement during his second season.
