San Diego Sockers News Release

The San Diego Sockers are proud to welcome San Diego Chargers placekicker and long-time Sockers fan Nick Novak to deliver a ceremonial first kick prior to Sunday's game between San Diego and the Ontario Fury. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:05pm at the Valley View Casino Center.

"I want to invite you to the February 9th game with me," said Novak on his Facebook page, "I grew up playing soccer and attending many SD Sockers games and camps." Novak posted a youth photo of himself posing with former players at a Sockers summer skills camp.

Novak, 32, spent his first thirteen years growing up in San Diego before moving to Maryland, where he went on to star at Charlottesville High School and the University of Maryland. Nick's NFL career began with the Washington Redskins in 2005 and has continued through Arizona and Kansas City before sticking with the Chargers in 2011. In 2013, Novak connected on 34 of 37 field goals (91.9%), with two of his three misses being blocked.

"We're really excited about Nick Novak being at the Sockers game this Sunday," said general manager John Kentera, "We've always enjoyed his work on the field and hope he will enjoy our work as he takes in our game Sunday night."

Also appearing on the field before the game will be 77th District California Assemblyman Brian Maienschein, who will also deliver a ceremonial first kick. Maienschein, a former San Diego city councilman, has been serving the 77th District since being elected in 2012.

The Sockers (12-3) have won twelve of thirteen after losing their first two games of the season. Currently a half-game ahead of the Las Vegas Legends in the Pacific Division standings, the Sockers take on the Ontario Fury (5-8) on Sunday night with a chance still to win their fifth straight division title. It's Fan Appreciation Night, with special giveaways in house throughout the game. Tickets are available at (866) 799-GOAL, online at sockers.com, or at the Valley View Casino Center box office on game night.
